Our grandfather Harry Karandzieff came to St. Louis from Greece and opened Crown Candy Kitchen in 1913, His son George took over in the 50’s and added malted milk shakes and deluxe sundaes to the menu. Now we are proud to carry on the tradition of one of St. Louis’ oldest and most popular attractions with our families. In addition to a hearty lunch fare and ice cream, we hand dip and box chocolates year round and mold solid figurines for all holidays. I was not expecting to like Crown Candy Kitchen as much as I did and that is entirely my fault. I went in expecting a cute novelty stop, some nostalgia and maybe a decent milkshake, and what I got was genuinely one of the most charming restaurant experiences I’ve had in a long time.
The place opened in 1913 and walking through the door you believe it immediately. Black and white tile floors. Dark wooden booths. Vintage Coca-Cola memorabilia covering the walls. An actual antique cash register. Jukeboxes at the tables. There is nothing performatively retro about it, it’s just what the place looks like because it has always looked like that. No one renovated it into a theme. It just survived.
We got lunch first because you should. The Heart-Stopping BLT is the most famous sandwich on the menu and the name is not hyperbole. I don’t know exactly how many pieces of bacon are on it but it is a lot and they are thick and kettle-cooked and the sandwich is enormous. My table of two split one and still left food on the plate. It’s served on white toast with Miracle Whip and the simplicity of it is the point. Really good bacon on really good toast. The Reuben was also excellent, corned beef piled high on rye with sauerkraut and Swiss and thousand island, the full classic version done right.
Then the malt. This is the reason to come. The chocolate malt is made old-school, with malt powder and real ice cream and ice-cold milk, blended in the metal cup that comes out alongside your glass. It is thick in a way that modern chain milkshakes have somehow forgotten how to be. Chocolatey and malty and deeply satisfying. They also do a five-malt challenge where you drink five 24-ounce malts in 30 minutes for free, which I watched someone attempt and did not come close to completing.

Heard all about the great malts and huge BLT and it did not disappoint! Our small group went around 2pm on a Saturday and got sat right away, no problems. We indulged in the chocolate malt, cherry shake, heart stopping BLT, grilled ham & cheese and the big cheese. The BLT was great, but definitely made us close to saying there was too much bacon (which we didn’t know was possible!) The bread was perfectly toasted & buttery for every sandwich. Highly recommend for casual, throwback dining with quality food for the price.

Crunchy fresh BLT, thin multiple layer of bacon made light but crunchiness. Generous bacon portion made great ratio with tomato, juicy tasty. Ice cream is home made, it is much more buttery and creamy, the flavor also very intense. Malt milkshake is just sweet but not overpowering.

Crown Candy is truly a city jewel. My granny used to bring us here every year for chocolate Easter bunnies, and those memories are still sweet. As an adult, my favorites have evolved, the strawberry malt is undefeated, and I’ve grown fond of the roast beef melt. And just like my grandma, I still grab the pecan clusters for myself every time. Some traditions are just meant to be kept.

This place is a staple in St. Louis. I stopped by today which is my first experience. Old school vibes with traditional real life old school furniture and cookware.
They make the chocolate candy in house.
Also noticed the customers seemed very happy and the atmosphere was engaging with nice ambiance. I looked around for candles but didnt see any yet I kept noticing lighting that gave me candle vibes.

I have been hearing about Crown Candy for so long and finally made it out here with some coworkers. We went on a weekday around 1pm and still had to wait about 45 minutes outside for a table of 4. Inside is very antique and old school with like twenty seats. The staff moves fast and is super friendly. I had to try the chocolate milkshake, definitely 10/10. I got the tuna salad sandwich and it was basically all tuna with barely any bread and on the saltier side. I still ate it all. My coworkers got different sandwiches and they seemed to like theirs more. We also saw a couple of people order the one pound bacon sandwich which is wild! I could never do it but it was cool to see it in person. Overall I liked the atmosphere and the history of the place but the tuna sandwich is not something I would get again. I do want to try their handmade candy too next time.

This very unique place serves the most amazing BLT on this planet. 1 whole pound of crisp delicious bacon on your toasted bread. It’s a heart attack on a plate but worth every bite. Their tuna sandwich was also very good….says my friend (so not from first hand taste testing). They have limited seating so be prepared to wait to get a table. We’ve tried to go back to eat but we were tight on time, so had to choose a different lunch venue. So arrive early to be able to get in faster. They have homemade chocolates…delicious. The vanilla malt is a most heavenly creamy taste. I would love to try more things but I have to be able to get in the door first … problem for me, but great for their business. Limited parking close by also. Worth the wait but don’t go if you’re in a rush.

I stopped by Crown Candy just to get a quick tour, and to my surprise another customer highly recommended the chili. O. M. Geeeeeee! That chili was AMAZING! So flavorful and comforting—and they even gave me plenty of oyster crackers to go with it. I couldn’t leave without picking up a bag of Dad’s oatmeal cookies and a half-pound of pecan turtles. I was in absolute hog heaven! Such a classic spot with great food and even better vibes. Highly recommend!
