As an Acadian (also known as Cajun: French ancestors settled in Louisiana), I am sorely disappointed. Please DO NOT think this place is a good representation of my people or our food.
My whole family is from Louisiana, so when I heard the owner is from Slidell, I was willing to try it. However, things seemed off when I went inside. It didn’t smell like food was cooking, and if you know Cajun food, you know it should smell like food in a Cajun restaurant. I chatted with the gentleman who had just shown another customer the ingredients in Tony’s Chachere seasoning to help them navigate an allergy, which was a good sign. I saw all the typical Cajun food on the menu, but again, where’s the food smell? I ordered a plate of crawfish étouffée and a plate of chicken sausage gumbo to go. There was a young woman working the register and while I was waiting I reminisced about my childhood summers in Louisiana, but she dryly said she isn’t from there just the owner. Not very warm like how a Cajun establishment oughta be. I expect to be called “baby girl” by a lady with Southern drawl. I expect to be asked about my day & follow up questions when I say something. Warmth, you know? I have this expectation of Cajun establishments in particular, above all other places. Unfortunately, the vibe was off in the place and they do not meet expectations… I heard some beeps in the kitchen, maybe a microwave? After awhile, the gentleman brought out my food in flimsy styrofoam boxes with a grocery bag from a grocery store (idk if it’s reused or taken?). He warned me that the gumbo was on the bottom & it might spill. It did spill. If you know gumbo is a soup texture, why not serve it to-go in a proper container? Bummer.
Now, Cajun food, the food of my people, is not pretty. It’s not meant to be pretty, it’s meant to be flavorful. It’s called soul food because people put their soul into it. This place isn’t it, at least with the present management.
The gumbo & the étouffée came with garlic bread which tasted like store bought frozen garlic bread. The gumbo was super thin. The sausage wasn’t cut or cooked right. The chicken was dry. The ratio was off. The flavor was ABSENT. The étouffée had the EXACT same flavor and TEXTURE of the brand Louisiana fish fry FROM THE BOX. And it tasted old. My husband and I are SICK after eating just a few bites. We just moved & didn’t have any groceries in the house yet, but we still only ate maybe 8 ounces because neither of us could stomach it. We threw it away & I really hate wasting food.
I rarely leave low reviews, but I don’t want anyone else to make the mistake I made by eating at this place. I already called my mama to tell her how upset I am. She’s coming up soon and I will have some proper Cajun food.
Side note: The box mix isn’t bad if you know how to doctor it up, and if you don’t try to pass it off as authentic homemade. There’s no shortcuts to a good roux.
The gentleman said he bought a food truck and wants to add burritos to the menu. I won’t be eating that either. Yikes.
