Cowtown Sushi: Southlakes Premier Destination for Fresh Japanese …
Reviews
Cowtown Sushi used to be our go to spot. We moved to Southlake this past Summer and I have easily ordered from here probably a hundred times. Sushi is a weekly staple for our family and we have spent thousands of dollars between dine in, takeout, and many lunch orders. I almost never write negative reviews, especially as a business owner myself, but this is no longer a one off experience. It has been ongoing from day one.
The issue is not the food. The chefs are excellent. The sushi is fresh, creative, and consistently delicious. If I could order directly from the kitchen, I would.
The problem is the service, specifically one server (middle aged, glasses, short hair). Every single time she is our server, the experience is unpleasant. This is not occasional, not dependent on how busy it is, and not something that started recently. She has been this way since the very first time we encountered her, before she even knew us. There is no greeting, no warmth, no smile. She appears visibly annoyed by customers, rushes interactions, and makes you feel like you are inconveniencing her just by being there.
Any request, even something very simple, is met with resistance and visible frustration. She acts as though she is giving you the world by agreeing, even when the chefs regularly accommodate these requests and have done so many times. It often feels like a power struggle rather than customer service. She never smiles and consistently makes you feel badly for asking for anything at all.
This is not just our experience. We have recommended Cowtown Sushi to several friends, and all of us now cringe when we see that she is the server. Multiple friends have shared the same feedback independently and have also stopped going because of the service.
Our final straw was a small advance lunch order for my daughter’s birthday at school. This is something we have done many times before. We place the order the day prior so it is ready shortly after opening so I can get to school before the lunch period ends. The chefs have always been fine with this. She doesn’t typically work during the day, but there she was and of course I was met with pushback, frustration, and repeated resistance, as if the request was unreasonable. She wanted me to call in the oder the next day at 11am when they open. Finally she said, “Ok, I’ll have to ask the chefs.” When I asked to speak with an owner to share broader concerns about service, no contact information was provided.
We ended up taking our order elsewhere, and the difference was night and day. Friendly, accommodating, and appreciative. The way you expect to be treated as a customer.
There also seem to be ongoing operational issues. Frequently there are no paper menus available. We have been given reused (no joke, actual used or dirty order sheets with previous orders crossed out). Often there is only one server handling all dine in and takeout, which only amplifies the stress and poor experience.
This is such a shame because the chefs are doing everything right. The food is excellent and the chefs themselves are kind and professional. Unfortunately, the service overshadows all of it.
We have stopped ordering altogether, which we never thought we would say. If the service ever improves, we would happily return. Until then, we will be taking our business elsewhere.
We have eaten here numerous times, and each time I’m reminded at the outstanding quality and taste of the food. Whether my daughters ordering chicken fried rice, or the many unique sushi dishes that I order for my wife and I, it is always delicious!
Pros:
– Outstanding quality of the sushi and other food!
– Beautiful presentation
– Very attentive. The Sushi Chef’s and the wait staff frequently check up on you to make sure you have enough ginger, and even ask if you would like ponzu sauce.
– Delicious entrées and incredibly delicious sushi.
– Best Ika (squid) anywhere I’ve had in the DFW area. The scallops are also deliciously prepared. In fact, my only regret is I don’t have a large enough stomach to indulge further .
Please be sure to check out this gem of a sushi restaurant located at the corner of Davis Boulevard in Southlake Boulevard…in the Urban Air Trampoline park shopping.
As for the rolls, try the Mt. Fuji Roll! It’s colorful deliciousness on a plate. You’ve got shrimp tempura, crab, cream cheese, avocado, wrapped in rice and served over spicy mayo.
