Lovely dining experience, where hospitality and quality are abundant. The wine pairings are spectacular, but so is the non- alcoholic pairings. In particular, the candied thyme tea is a must try. Complex, delicious and perfectly paired. The experience is carefully timed, so show up to your reservation on time. Every table is a chef’s table. The duck preparation and through line in the meal is exquisite. The dessert of mint gelato, quince, and almond cookie was amazing. An inventive, delicious meal filled with care and attention to detail. Well worth a visit!!!

This was an exceptional and deeply memorable dining experience. From the moment you walk in, you are welcomed as part of the family. It feels less like a restaurant and more like being invited into a country farmhouse outside Paris. Intimate, warm, and unpretentious in the best possible way.

The food is outstanding and confidently world-class. What makes it truly special is how humble, seasonal ingredients are transformed into remarkably beautiful and refined dishes, many sourced directly from their own farm. Nothing feels overworked or showy. Each plate reflects care, restraint, and a deep respect for the ingredients themselves. This is farm-driven cooking at its highest level.

We have traveled extensively, both internationally and across the U.S., and the quality here easily stands alongside the best meals we have had anywhere. The flavors are thoughtful and balanced, and the experience unfolds at exactly the right pace.

Equally memorable is the hospitality. The warmth is genuine and personal, creating a sense of belonging rather than service. There is a quiet magic in how food, place, and people come together here.

Coq au Vin is not just a great meal. It is an experience rooted in craft, generosity, and intention. A true standout in Portland and a destination worthy of any food-focused traveler.

Coq à Vin feels less like dining out and more like being welcomed into someone’s home. It’s the kind of true farm-to-table experience that reminds you of those European countryside excursions — the ones hosted in a monastery, on a farm, or in someone’s own kitchen — where every detail carries a story.

The duck was absolutely beautiful: buttery, tender, and cooked with real care. The pâté was another standout — homemade and paired with a jam made right on their farm, which was so fresh and bright it completely elevated the dish. The pappardelle was delicate and clearly crafted with intention; I just wished for a bit more flavor depth, though its freshness still shone through.

Not every dish was my personal favorite, but the craftsmanship and intention behind each were clear.

The wine pairing, though, tied everything together — possibly the best in Portland. Each pour felt deliberate and truly enhanced the dishes, turning the meal into something special. It was super generous too, you could take as much as you wanted out of the bottle.

While $300 before tip for two felt a bit steep for how many dishes I personally loved solely based on taste, but it did feel justified by the overall experience — intimate, sincere, and clearly made with heart.

What do you get when you combine PNW farm-to-table authenticity with French fine dining? Coq Au Vin! My partner and I had a truly beautiful experience at this unique homestyle restaurant. Vintage decor and Rose’s exquisite wine pairings made this 5 course meal a divine gastronomic adventure into chef George’s wonderful vision of locally sourced French cuisine. Loved the family vibes of getting to know their children as well! Highly recommended for a romantic dinner for two ❤️

Rose and George knocked this absolutely out of the park. Eating here is an experience, not just a meal. We came here not as foodies, but as a few hungry people curious about a cultivated dinner.

I’m gluten intolerant. Not only was George able to accomodate me, he actually deviated from the “normal” menu to make items that were naturally gluten free. As a result, I was enjoying a meal just as absolutely delicious as the others (and fending off nosy forks from the rest of my party). It’s a very rare thing to recieve a GF meal from a non only-GF-establishment that is as delicious and carefully curated as the glutenous offerings. I’m used to settling and being happy with what’s available. Coq Au Vin was absolutely not like that, and I’m afraid my standards have been spoiled from this point forward.

Dietary restrictions aside, the ambience and service was excellent. Rose and George clearly pour a lot of love, skill, and passion into Coq Au Vin, and it’s obvious. Coq Au Vin is the perfect stage for their art, and the perfect choice for anyone looking for a culinary tour of skill.

Incredible experience! The people here are so lovely and the food was phenomenal. This is a very special and unique dining experience, I haven’t seen anything else like it in Portland. The food just kept on coming, and each course George made was more fabulous than the last. And the wine pairing Rose picked out to go with each course matched it so perfectly. Plus they shared stories all about what had inspired them to build this restaurant and their menus as they have. It was so charming and special to be able to connect with them and hear their inspiration!

Plus I kept raving about this place so much that my parents had to go too. They went for their anniversary this year, and were not disappointed! They’ve since sent many of their friends because it is truly that special!

Honestly feel it’s one of the best meals I’ve ever had in Portland, paired with the sweetest and most unique experience of small room dining, with wonderful hosts! Can’t wait to be back!

COQ AU VIN, owned by local family and operated by Rose in the front & George in the kitchen is the most unique dining experience I have had.

Not only did it blow away all expectations I had coming in, but it gave me a new perspective into how personal a plate of food can be, how developed a plate can taste when paired well with a bottle of wine, and how delicious a plate can be when the upmost importance is put into the core of a dish – the ingredients.

Every, single, dish was dripping in flavour and enticing you to take another bite the moment the first one is within your mouth. Each dish we tried was very refined and felt concentrated on a few elements, letting the most powerful ingredients take center stage which I loved.

The wine pairing cannot be skipped, it was such a fun experience getting to try multiple different wines with the different dishes, it was unlike anything I have experienced before! I loved that the bottle is left at the table so if you get one you love, you can continue to enjoy it (and buy a bottle after dinner is concluded).

COQ AU VIN is the exemplary example of what makes Portland food special; it’s unique, it’s personal, it’s delicious, it’s sourced from local ingredients, and it’s beautifully crafted. COQ AU VIN is the best dining experience I’ve had and I hope you are able to try this place. It is very expensive so I think it’s a great place to go for a special event. I could write so much praise for every single dish we had but that would make this review even longer than it already is. Just do yourself a favor and go experience COQ AU VIN in beautiful NW Portland ❤️

A Truly One-of-a-Kind Experience

For my birthday, my husband took me to Coq au Vin, and I had no idea what a true treat awaited us. We’ve dined at dozens of restaurants in Portland over the years and have had many wonderful meals—but nothing prepared us for this special evening.

From the moment we stepped inside, it felt as though we’d just walked off a countryside hike into a cozy farmhouse. Rose greeted us with such warmth, and we even met a few of the children as they settled in while their parents prepared our feast they just harvested from their farm hours prior.

George brought out the first dish as Rose poured the wine—each pairing perfectly complementing the food. We enjoyed five courses, each with its own unique wine pairing, and every combination was simply outstanding. The layers of flavor, both in the wines and the dishes, were mind-blowing. Throughout the evening, I felt completely at home and genuinely cared for. By the time we said our goodbyes—ending with hugs that felt like those between old friends—our hearts and bellies were full and warm with contentment.

Truly a one-of-a-kind experience!

Coq au Vin is honestly a GEM! The vibe is super cozy and welcoming, and the staff make you feel right at home. You can tell they really care about what they do.

The food was amazing! The fact that the menu changes and is never the same is amazing; it keeps things exciting every time!
The Coq au Vin dishes were rich and every bite was a burst of flavor! The wine list was spot-on and even the dessert was the cherry on top to my night!

If you’re looking for a spot that feels special but not stuffy, this is it. Perfect for date night, catching up with friends, or just treating yourself. I’ll definitely be coming back! ️

Warm, inviting, and delicious are the words I’ll use to describe the dining experience here. Rose are George are the proprietors and the food they serve is primarily from their farm. And what they don’t source themselves, comes from other local, high quality sources.

Since they work with what’s in season and available locally, they work on a pre fixe menu. We were treated to 5 amazing courses complete with wine pairings. It was divine.

I will let the photos speak for themselves. If you’re in Portland, treat yourself and make a reservation at Coq au Vin!
