We stopped for lunch on a cold Saturday in December to sample their famous pasties. We were not disappointed. Most orders are from the drive-thru or takeout but we walked over from Marinette and ate inside at the only table they have. The staff was exceptionally friendly and served us quickly. We ordered one beef and one beef and cabbage pasty and we got them almost instantly They were both hot, generously stuffed, and tasted great and we loved the charm of their kitchy interior.

As a man who will travel unlimited miles for food, you should be surprised that I have never had a pasty before. Especially since I live in Michigan and travel north frequently. For the longest time, I thought they were only things of fairytales, like unicorns or pockets. But you can’t travel 8 feet in the UP without being beckoned by a pasty shop. And because I’m me, I completely missed my opportunity until I was at the Michigan/Wisconsin border.

But fear not! I wouldn’t be writing this review if I HADN’T had one! So this pasty establishment was quaint. It had a drive through, a table in the inside and a table on the outside. I mess with that. Sometimes you don’t need the extras. Now, as I learned about the pasty, it seemed like the most basic one was beef and rutabaga. Now, everybody knows that nobody knows what a rutabaga is. It’s just one of those things that show up in recipes. And because I’m trying this for the first time, I want the full effect. So bring on the baga!

Ok, so, since it was nice outside, I decided to sit on the picnic table. They gave me my pasty on a plate with utensils and I ordered 4oz of brown gravy to go with it. I split that bad boy down the middle like the Red Sea and waterboarded it with my gravy. Took a deep breath and dove right in.

Listen. I still might not know what a rutabaga is, but I didn’t let a single little square of them escape. Everything was hot, the crust was flaky, the gravy thiccc. Why did I never know these things were basically pot pies? I LOVE pot pies. It was gone in minutes. Just wiped out. Like Thanos snapping his fingers. There was nothing I didn’t like about it. It was everything a first timer should have experienced. Pot Pie’s Cute Older Sister, Pasty 10/10.

A couple side notes:
If you see my photos, you see I chose milk as my drink of choice. That’s because I haven’t had milk in three days and I was getting cranky.

The only ONLY thing I would suggest, is they invest in either heavier duty plastic utensils or metal ones. Made it a little hard to cut into the bottom where the crust is rolled together. Certainly not something important enough to lose a star over, because honestly, you could punt this thing into a brick wall and I would happily eat it off there.

This was my first time trying pasties and they were so flaky and delicious. We had the soup of the day – chicken spatzel – and the breakfast options – Denver and sausage. We loved them so much we got a couple to go so we could try them throughout the rest of the road trip. Nothing better then homemade food with a local touch. Stop by and enjoy!

We have tried several pastie shops in the UP but this was our first time at Colonel K’s. They were REALLY good. I’m actually surprised that i haven’t heard anyone recommend them over other places like Dobber’s or Gram’s because I now prefer Colonel K’s over them. The ladies working were very nice and you can’t beat that “Up North” vibe in a little pasty shop

My first time trying a pasty and I’m quite impressed. It’s a flaky dough pocket filled with hearty fillings.

Dough was buttery and flaky with the crimped edges reminding me of the crust on pie dough (the best part!!). These things are stuffed to the brim and are amazing when eaten fresh. I got a large variety of fillings. Each were generously portioned.

The cabbage and beef was tender. Flavorful and well cooked. The chicken reminded me of a pot pie filling which I was a huge fan of. If you’re vegetarian, the vegetarian version is quite similar just with no chicken. I was surprised as most places don’t do vegetarian well, but this was a hit! It was packed with flavor. The Denver and Ham&Cheese were fantastic breakfast pasties. Generous portions of eggs inside.

Overall, can’t recommend enough!

Beef with the gravy was the favorite. Chicken and broccoli was also really tasty. Baked fresh daily. Helpful and friendly staff as well. I do believe it’s just a drive up, but there wasn’t a wait and the prices are good.

First time visit. It’s made for carryout. Just passing by on trip home and decided to try it. I got 4 frozen and one ready to eat. Reasonable prices, beef and cabbage was an excellent pasty. Girls working were very polite and friendly. I’ll try it again next time I’m nearby.
