Overall, I thought the food was very good. I especially liked the Rack of Lamb, Bouillabaisse and the Tuna Crudo. Desserts were solid, although I thought the crust was a bit too sweet on the Creme Brulee. The only thing I didn’t care for was the Brussels sprouts, thought it needed something to balance the acidity of the cheese.
Good, friendly service. The most memorable thing will be the interior design. It seems like they put a great deal of thought and effort into it.
A huge shoutout to Emily behind the bar — she was amazing and so fun to talk to. (Yes, Emily, this is a shoutout from us — and from the couple who told us to seek you out on their way out!) She made the whole night even better with her energy and great conversation.
If you’re heading to Code Red, definitely find Emily. You won’t regret it!
The entrance door is a large steel door with a knocker, a combination lock and a sliding grate in the middle. To gain access, you need to use the knocker and then provide the code word when it is answered. I, however, didn’t know this so I had a great banter with the staff before being allowed in lol!
As soon as you walk in, you feel like you have been transferred back to the prohibition era. The space is intimate and dimly lit with red lighting and decor all around. The seating ranges from velvet couches to other antique furniture. Luckily, because I arrived early enough and didn’t have a reservation I was able to get a seat at the bar.
They have happy hour aka bootlegger hour from 5-7 with both drink and food specials. Tuesdays they also have $1 oysters all day while supplies last. The menu is a presented in newpaper format from th early 1900’s. In addition to the menu it is filled with fun facts from history.
The staff were great! Super friendly and food and drink came out fairly quickly. I usually avoid the AdMo area due to the traffic and awful parking but definitely plan to be back to visit this gem.
Great music, great crowd, and excellent service every time. Perfect for date night or a night out with friends. Highly recommend!
If you like when you don’t see a bill. Asked to hand over a card with no knowledgeable of their service charges or prices, or ability to add gratuity – then this is your spot.
If you want a vibe killer.. slow music, bright lights, rude service., this is your place.
My friend and I hit up CODE RED in Adams Morgan to celebrate Mardi Gras—and WOW, what a night!
This speakeasy-style bar is tucked away behind an unassuming steel door, but trust me, what’s behind it is pure magic. From the moment you knock and whisper the secret password (shhh… lips sealed!), you’re transported into a sultry, stylish lounge that screams cool.
The ambiance? Moody lighting, vintage glam, and a bold mural painted by one of the bartenders—yes, they’re that talented. The live music kept the energy high all night long, and the cocktails, bites, and service were absolute fire.
Whether you’re into hidden bars, live music, or just vibing somewhere new in Washington DC, CODE RED is it. Can’t wait to go back and unlock more speakeasy secrets!
