Cocina Express in Des Plaines is the definition of “fine” – the kind of quick Mexican spot you’re happy exists when you’re starving and don’t feel like cooking, but won’t necessarily dream about later. The tacos al pastor are solid: decent spit-roasted pork with a little char, served on doubled corn tortillas with the usual onion-cilantro-lime setup, and the green salsa has a nice kick. Burritos are the size of your forearm and come smothered if you want, and everything moves fast whether you’re ordering at the counter or through the drive-thru. Prices are fair (three tacos and a horchata ran me about twelve bucks), and the staff is friendly enough even when it’s slammed at lunch.
It’s just… average in a way that keeps it from standing out in a suburb full of better options. The meat can be dry if you hit them at an off-hour, the rice tastes like it came from a steam table that’s been on too long, and the red salsa is basically mild ketchup with a whisper of chile. Portions are generous, but flavor feels dialed back to please the broadest crowd possible. Three stars feels exactly right: perfectly serviceable, totally forgettable, and I’ll probably be back the next time I’m too lazy to drive the extra ten minutes to somewhere great. Our new favorite Mexican spot in the area. Got an al pastor burrito, pazole, and champurrado. All great. Burrito wasn’t greasy and had good flavor. Pazole was best part of the meal. I haven’t tried champurrado before but it was a warm, delicious drink that wasn’t too sweet. The person at the front was really nice and helpful and even let us sample the drinks. Bring cash for a small discount. Will definitely be back!

Poor Customer Service. Placing an order by calling the restaurant. Someone answer s but hang up the phone. Tried calling 3x. Not enough staff I guess. But when I went inside the restaurant to order , I can hear the phone ringing but the lady who was holding the wireless phone did not acknowledge the call and just hang it up. Unbelievable. And the wait time for your order is 20 minutes.
I don’t know but it just did not happen to me.

Got the torta dinner for pickup, the food was delicious especially their green salsa. Also very reasonable prices, $12 for a torta, rice, beans, and a soda. Incredible food and value, and the man running the place was very friendly

Nothing special about the food. Cashier told me my total $24. Said to me right back with your food. Didn’t wait for me sign and give back the receipt. Looking closely it was a few more bucks then $24. She gave herself a tip. No big deal but very unprofessional. Well didn’t see that sign. Maybe you and your employees should let customers know instead of just running off.

Friendly staff that took my order. Got the Carne Asada Burrito Combo. Barely any meat and loaded with rice and beans as filler. Meat was very tough and cut really small to compensatefor the toughness. The wrapper broke easily and did not hold shape.
