Wandering into **Claro’s Italian Markets** on Valley Blvd in San Gabriel feels like stumbling into Nonna’s secret garden—vibrant, aromatic, and brimming with temptations that hit all the senses . This family-run staple since ’48 isn’t just a market; it’s a love letter to Italy, with a bakery section that’s the undisputed heart. The air hums with yeast and citrus zest, and tucked alongside the pastries? A charming little floral nook blooming with fresh imports—rosemary bundles, edible flowers for garnishing tiramisu, and vibrant bouquets that scream “bring this home for dinner” .
The **bakery** steals the show: crusty ciabatta loaves ($4.50) still warm from the oven, perfect for sopping up olive oil; flaky sfogliatelle ($3.75) with that ricotta-lemon zing that transports you to Naples in one shatter. Don’t skip the **cannoli** ($4)—crisp shells stuffed with silky sheep’s milk ricotta, dotted with pistachios and a whisper of orange blossom. And the bomboloni? Sugary doughnut pillows filled with Nutella or custard ($2.50 each)—grab a half-dozen and thank me later . Everything’s handmade daily, no preservatives, just pure, honest carbs.
The flowers add that unexpected poetry: vibrant Sicilian lemons twisted into centerpieces, lavender sprigs for your focaccia game. It’s not a full florist, but those pops of color elevate the whole experience—pair a bouquet with your bread haul for under $20 total. Service? Warm as the fresh-baked rolls—staff slice your prosciutto while chatting family recipes.
Only docking 0.6 because the floral selection skews seasonal (summer herbs dominate), and parking’s a Valley Blvd shuffle. But Claro’s bakery-flower combo is pure San Gabriel magic—cozy, authentic, and utterly craveable. I’ll be back for those bomboloni and basil bundles next weekend.
This time around, I decide to buy all the deli meats and make my own sandwich. It was great
If you haven’t been, I highly suggest you go to Claro’s on Valley. It’s still a gem that survived the SGV many changes over the years. Glad I came back.
The deli had sandwiches and hot food. I’ll have to come back and try.
