Stepping into the City Pool Hall, a place that’s been slinging cues and cold drinks since 1946, you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find a culinary gem. But tucked away in a corner, they’ve quietly mastered the art of the smash burger, and it’s a delightful surprise.
The burger itself is a testament to simple perfection. Two thin, crispy patties, smashed to caramelized glory, arrive with a satisfying sizzle. The edges are lacy and brown, offering a delightful contrast to the juicy, flavorful interior. The classic toppings – melted American cheese, crisp lettuce, ripe tomato are all present and accounted for, working in perfect harmony. The bun, a soft, slightly sweet affair, holds everything together without falling apart under the weight of the delicious contents.
What elevates this burger beyond the ordinary is the sheer quality of the meat and the precision of the cook. You can taste the difference in every bite. The patties are clearly made from a good blend, and the smashing technique ensures maximum Maillard reaction, resulting in a depth of flavor that’s hard to beat.
The atmosphere, of course, adds to the experience. Surrounded by the clack of pool balls, the low hum of conversation, and the nostalgic charm of a place that’s seen decades of local life, you’re not just eating a burger; you’re partaking in a slice of history.
Overall, the City Pool Hall’s smash burger is a hidden gem worth seeking out. It’s a testament to the fact that sometimes, the best things in life are simple, well-executed, and found in the most unexpected places. 4 out of 5 stars.

Not everything has to be so damn fancy! If you want that old school, smashed on the grill, fresh burger, this is the spot! I just hate that I was only visiting and can’t get them all the time. I’m telling you. Go here and eat and support the locals. You won’t regret it!

city pool hall might sound like just a place to shoot pool, but the burgers are what make it worth the trip. they’re juicy, perfectly seasoned, and honestly taste like something you’d expect from a dedicated burger joint rather than a pool hall.

the service is hit-or-miss — not terrible, just a little slow and distracted at times. if you’re patient, the food makes up for it. the atmosphere is exactly what you’d want in a spot like this: casual, a little loud, with an old-school vibe that makes it fun to hang out with friends.

definitely worth checking out if you’re craving a great burger and don’t mind waiting a bit.

Drove from Louisville, Kentucky to visit the Monticello pool hall for the delicious hamburgers. Have them about once every two years never disappoints. They are very good. The place is clean and the people are friendly.

If you have NEVER had a pool room cheeseburger, you just ain’t ever had a cheeseburger! I grew up eating these locally and they’re just as good today as I remember them growing up. Make sure to get you some onion, ketchup, mustard and salt on your burger, or just tell them that you want “everything on it,” they’ll know what you mean. FYI, you have to at least get 2 burgers to get started, be sure and come back again!

Hometown original here in Monticello. The Pool Hall has been an icon here for years. Great place to grab a burger and a bag of chips, shoot a game of pool.
