As a person that travels extensively both internationally and domestically the BBQ found at City Limits is bar-none…It’s about the food and the southern atmosphere.

If you’re looking for the ultimate BBQ experience, look no further—this place is a meat-lover’s paradise. The moist beef brisket and tender beef ribs are absolute standouts that literally fall off the bone it all, practically melting in your mouth with every bite.

Don’t skip the smoked chicken wings either; they have that perfect deep, smoky flavor that sets them apart from the standard bar fare.

The macaroni and cheese is incredibly creamy and often cited as a fan favorite.

The southern classics of greens, beans, potato salad, and coleslaw are all perfectly seasoned and provide the ideal balance to the rich meats.

By all means, you have to save room for the apple cobbler topped with a small cup of Blue Bell vanilla ice cream—it’s the best way to end the meal.

I’ll be back as soon and humanly possible.

We stopped by on a Sunday and by the time we got to the counter to order they were out of most of their proteins. The owner kept coming out to update us as far as what he had left. We roughed it out and made it to the counter and ordered. The pull pork was great. The Texas Tater was fabulous as were the collards and shells and cheese!!! So we wanted to try it again, so we went back yesterday. The line wasn’t long at all. We only waited about 30-45 minutes. We had a beef rib, brisket, Texicano sandwich, collard greens, shells and cheese, hopping johns, and hash and rice. This is some of the best food that I personally have ever eaten. The people were all very courteous and went out of their way to help!! I would strongly urge you to try this if you’re looking for a different spin on barbecue in SC!!! ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!!

Just like all the rave reviews in national media publications say, this place has excellent food. But if you’re a barbeque afficianado looking for the “best barbeque ever” and you believe the hype, you might be disappointed.

Favorites were the chopped brisket and mac and cheese, but everything on the menu is very good. Whatever you pick, you can’t go wrong. They ran out of the pork burnt ends at about 12:30 just before we got to the front of the line, so unfortunately we didn’t get to try them. The ribs were just too exorbitantly expensive to even consider ordering.

Be prepared to wait in line for potentially hours and spend ~$35 per person for takeout or just to eat on picnic benches in a rundown shack of a building. Wait time at 11:45am on a rainy summer Saturday was close to 2 hours. $170 fed our group of 5.

Is it worth the wait and the high cost of admission? If you’re looking for the best barbecue in the south, probably not. If you’re new to the area like me, and have been struggling to find good barbecue for months or years, then yes, you’ll definitely want to try it for yourself!

The owner is very nice, friendly and really cares about the customer experience. He makes some great food and he deserves all the hype and the waves of acclaim he’s riding. If I’m in the area again and the wait is shorter I’d definitely eat here again. I still need to try the ribs, hash, cobbler and more!

The hype for this very cool bar b que joint is spot on! We arrived 45 minutes before they opened the door today, and there was a line already, by 11:00 there were 50 people waiting we got in no problem the owner came out and talked about his menu for today, describing in great detail and how he orders farm to table meat and vegetables; example it takes them 3 days to make their delicious beans: he has all kinds of different sauces and clams you won’t need any, and he was 100% correct be prepared for a feast and enough food for two days: food is outstanding, staff treats you like your old friends, owner is very personable, and apologies for his prices, but this not your average barbecue joint and goes into great detail about how he pays top dollar to get the very best product that he can buy to make your visit memorable. Takes credit cards, there is about 40 places sitting inside and out: not fancy just basic. Absolutely return and try more items: ps;if everyone in party orders something different, you can share

What a feast!
It was like being invited in to the City Limits home and served like family!
I arrived about 11:30 on Sunday for their 12:00 opening.
The chef came out while we were in line and gave us a run down of what to expect(timing) and the specials of the day.
I had to try all the meats so ended up with a hot dog, pulled pork, chopped brisket and burnt ends (Char Sui style).
The meats were all cooked so perfect I did not use any of the tasty sauces on the side!!
The homemade hot dog was smoked and covered with delicious brisket chili.
I did the sweet beans – perfectly cooked pintos that are very similar to our family recipe and the greens beans that were juicy and delicious.
While they are only open 9 hours a week I’ll have to be more careful to plan my Columbia travel timing.
Thanks to the Chef and crew for a great meal.

I feel like barbecue spots might follow a similar playbook regarding meats, smoke, sides, and sauce, but they certainly are not created equal. When I was visiting my sister in Columbia, South Carolina, she told me about City Limits Barbecue and since there was only one day on our calendar that they would be open, our schedule was set. We got there pretty early after they had opened, but there’s still was a line out the door. A little bit into our wait in line the owner/chef came out to talk us through the menu, his process, and recommendations. This was such a cool touch. I loved hearing about everything that he put into the product and the passion he has for his cooking.
As you can imagine… The food was SPECTACULAR. Look, the brisket was absolutely top-notch and this beef rib was possibly the most tender chunk of meat I have ever had. We also got a half pound of their chopped whole hog option with crispy skins, and while it was delicious and flavorful, it didn’t have the smoke or barbecue flavor without sauce that I was looking for. Of course, we had to go with practically an appetizer sampler of the sides and if I would’ve been able to put the food away, I would have just ordered one of everything. The collard greens were really good and not overly bitter, this sweet jalapeño coleslaw was maybe one of my favorite coleslaw recipes I’ve ever had, but the star of the show in my opinion were the sweet beans which was what most people would call baked beans. The amount of time, effort, and attention to every flavor in these beans was 10/10. Talk about bringing a humble ingredient to life. The cornbread was as amazing as you would imagine and the carrot cake was delicious. If you’re looking for something unique with their barbecue, opt for the brisket sandwich with chili con queso or the Texicano. I was being a purist snob and just wanted the beef rib, but I stole a bite of my sister‘s sandwich and holy cow… Starve yourself the day before you visit, arrive early, and prepare to have a religious experience.

Excellent food. Arrive early as they often sell out of the most popular items. Only cmplant is that they’re hours and days are very limited. Definitely one of the best Q spots in the Columbia area.

This place serves barbecue that hits you with flavor from the first look. The brisket is tender with a perfect smoke ring, the beef rib is rich and fall-off-the-bone, and the pork ribs are beautifully seasoned. The sides hold their own — creamy mac and cheese, fresh potato salad, and sweet, fluffy cornbread. Even the pickles and onions add the perfect tangy bite. Also, there is free water for those waiting in line, which by the away, it moved fast.

What really sets this spot apart is the pit master. He actually comes out to the line to explain how each meat is cooked, sharing the smoking process and recommending the best cuts of the day. It’s a small touch that makes the experience feel personal and authentic.

Overall, a memorable, delicious meal that shows real pride in the craft of barbecue.

Hands down best BBQ I’ve ever had! We had pulled pork, brisket, bohemian hot links, collard greens, and esquites. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS! The service and atmosphere were top notch. Every person working was smiling, friendly, and attentive…and not like Chic-fil-a where everyone smiles and says it’s their pleasure because they have to. They were genuinely happy to be there and love what they do. They do a fantastic job and I will absolutely be returning anytime I’m in Columbia.

I stopped by City Limits BBQ on my lunch break, finally giving in after always seeing a line outside. Unfortunately, they had already sold out of BBQ for the day (they close at 3), but as I was leaving I had a great conversation with what I think was either the owner or manager. They convinced me to try one of their hotdogs and wow, that was the best decision I could’ve made!

I ordered The Sandy hotdog, and it was hands down the BEST hotdog I’ve ever had. The hotdog itself was smoked to perfection, and the chili and slaw on top took it to another level. Absolutely incredible.

I’ll definitely be back (and earlier this time) to finally try the BBQ. Just a heads up they’re only open on Saturdays and Sundays, so make sure you get there early before they sell out. If the hotdog is this good, I can only imagine how amazing the rest of the menu is!
