We decided to dine at City Lights of China tonight.

Beware this Restaurant is a shadow of its former self.
The Main Dining Area is closed. This Restaurant caters to Take Out and Delivery customers.

Worst soups I ever tasted.
My wife thought the General Tso’s Chicken was eatable.

I ordered Kung Pao Chicken.
The chicken was good. However, the vegetables weren’t cooked and raw peanuts were the crowning item to a terrible meal.

This Restaurant has survived since before 1988 when I moved to Henrico (Richmond), VA.

Visited City Lights of China on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at about 7:00 pm.

The place was empty, except for a cashier and a delivery driver. The food was a little more expensive than I expected.

Becareful when you order food, because they have small and large portions. I was tired and I thought I ordered small portions of pork fried rice for my wife and pork lo mein for myself.
Consequently, we had leftovers.

Nonetheless, we enjoyed the takeout dinners.

We will return and visit this forgotten gem.

RECOMMENDATION:
Don’t judge a book [or Restaurant] by its cover [Building Facade]

Ordered because they left it on the door of our apartment. I’ve ordered from other places so I know the general taste of takeout Chinese. When I say this place was mediocre, I mean it had no flavor at all. Like, it tastes of NOTHING. No salt, no spice, no real flavor of anything it was so weird. It wasn’t inherently bad, however the lack of flavor was astonishing to say the least.

This place has great value for their food. They have a lunch special you just cant beat. I always get prompt service. They always have a very clean establishment every time I come. I look forward to trying more items from their menu, as it is made fresh when you order it.

We ate there a month ago and a month before that and each time it was excellent. They have great food.

This was our go-to Chinese place for years. It was the only one like it in the area where you could get vegetable dumplings, and everything we ordered was always well made. Recently, ownership changed, and it had done a complete 180 in terms of quality. Food we were told was vegetarian was full of meat, we got double-charged for part of our order, and the lo mein was the worst I’ve ever had. Ended up paying nearly $60 for food that was inedible. We won’t be back.

This is the worst Chinese Food I’ve ever had. House Special Soup was light water with yellow food coloring. Not one Won Ton in it. Egg Rolls tasted as if they had been freezer burned and then fried in old used oil. I took 3-4 bites and threw the rest plus the second in the trash. My husband ordered the crispy beef. I wouldn’t feed that to my worst enemy. It was like hard pieces of tasteless jerky dunked in tempura batter and fried in old oil. You could not even chew it. House special fried rice had no flavor. I only hope we don’t get sick.

The Won ton soup was literally greasy oily broth & a strange orange color… the won tons themselves were inedible. I’ve ordered here for years…I didn’t realize they changed ownership. Can’t imagine they will last.
