But why 3 stars?
It is a serve yourself type of place, and the grill opening is very small, it can only fit 7-9 skewers at a time. Not great for groups more than 3.
It takes SUPER LONG TIME to have a batch of these skewers to be cook and ready to eat.
The table is very low and your knee will not fit under the table. You are bending down to eat the entire time, stomach feels upset.
Floor is also super oily and slippery, be careful not to fall.
Ambiance: 5/5
This is a place designed for groups. The setup is casual, energetic, and tailored for sharing. The grill-in-the-center concept creates a festive environment, making it a great option for gatherings with friends or family who want to linger over drinks and skewers.
Authenticity: 4.5/5
The skewers taste authentic and capture the essence of Chinese street BBQ—spiced, savory, and just the right amount of smoky. From lamb to chicken wings to veggie skewers, the flavor profiles feel genuine and satisfying.
Flavor: 4/5
The seasonings stand out, especially the cumin and chili powder that coat the meats. However, since diners cook the skewers themselves, the flavor can vary depending on how evenly they’re grilled. When cooked just right, they’re delicious; but it does take effort to avoid undercooking or burning.
Service: 4/5
Staff are attentive enough, ensuring grills stay hot and orders come out steadily. However, there isn’t much assistance with the actual cooking process, which could be a challenge for first-timers unfamiliar with table-top grilling.
Cost: 4/5
Reasonably priced for group dining, with skewers adding up quickly depending on how much you order. Considering the quality of the meat and the fun factor, the value feels fair for what you get.
Final verdict: Chubby Skewers is a solid spot for anyone craving authentic Chinese BBQ in a social, lively setting. Just know that part of the experience requires you to stay on top of the grill—constant flipping is necessary to ensure even cooking and avoid burning. If you’re okay with that, it’s a fun and tasty place well worth visiting.
We went on a Saturday night and I was shocked to see how cramped it was in Chubby Skewers. The tables were TINY—you definitely won’t be able to comfortably fit your legs under the table. It feels like the table height is only fine if you’re sitting on the floor, which you’re not.
Also, they were BLASTING obnoxious electronic music the entire time. I would highly recommend bringing ear plugs because it sounds like you’re at a concert there. I’m sure the employees are gonna notice that their hearing is declining in the future if they spend that much time in such a boisterous environment.
It was painfully clear that management doesn’t want you to stay there long. Coupled with the cramped seating situation, it’s evident that they’re just trying to get as many customers as possible. I’ve heard from friends that other locations they’ve visited weren’t like this one in Rowland Heights, so I wouldn’t recommend coming to this one unless you don’t care about the atmosphere at all. It’s a shame because the food was actually good. The parking situation is pretty bad though, so also keep that in mind if you want to visit.
The portions are generous, the prices are reasonable, and the menu has a great variety. The staff are friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is lively but comfortable.
Definitely one of the best skewer spots in the area. I’ll absolutely be back!
