Reviews
They have desi lorry replica, which gives you the vibe that it’s a highway dhaba or punjabi place… but walls are all painted with Mumbai chowpatty scenes which goes well with the restaurant name. Then came the server, who was fluent in Gujarati and mentioned Kathiyawadi thali is their special (so we are in gujarat now) and the most interesting part, as we got near to the checkout counter (reception was giving orders to the chef in Telugu)
It’s a true desi fusion where everyone would feel they belong!
That being said, food was genuinely good, especially kathiyawadi thali was too delicious and they had unlimited Ghee serving! what more do you want in a gujarati thali
Indo-Chinese was okayish, would try that at other places but will keep coming here for the gujarati thali
This time we got Thalis and every one of them was excellent.
For me they still have the best gujarati dal and lilva kachori. Every dish is good and while the thalis are not unlimited, they are more reasonably priced and very filling. Come hungry!
We have also gotten catering on multiple occasions and the food is always of great quality and good portions.
Definitely satisfied a craving and I will definitely be going back to try more of their food.
Also, there’s a free public parking lot only a 2 minute walk down the street.
Samosa was average good!
Masala chai was not bad- wish they had regular chai!
Ras malai needed to be more cold!
Service needed to be improved – seated us but no one came to take order for a bit. Until we called them after sitting awhile.
Staff was nice!
Ambiance (or graffiti on the wall) will remind you streets of Mumbai and that’s where the name ‘Chowpatty’ originated.
It was a quiet time (Around 4 PM), so no one was there, just us… we had Papdi chaat and Chole Bhature…both were good (but not extraordinary), nothing like “hey let’s go there again for some XYZ dish”… this is a typical taste that you can find anywhere…
Due to inflation, even chaat will cost you $10, this is the new normal…
Parking: roadside or just a block away there is a municipality parking.
Mirchi baji was okish, road shops would do it better.
The thalis are good and value for 15-20$.
Fried wonton was tasty.
Overall taste is average, was expecting bit more from a pro-desi joint.
The spacious seating and prompt, attentive service made for a welcoming first impression as we were seated and handed menus right away. While browsing, I noticed this was a strictly vegetarian establishment, which wasn’t an issue but did surprise me initially.
Our drinks presented a contrast. The Cool Chai, their version of iced masala chai, fell short as the cold temperature dulled the warm spices characteristic of traditional chai. My fiancée’s Mango Lassi fared better, being creamy, perfectly sweet, and exactly what you’d expect from this classic yogurt drink.
For entrees, my Mysore Masala Dosa stood out as excellent, featuring a crisp, golden crepe with well-spiced potato filling and just enough heat to distinguish it from a regular masala dosa. The accompanying sambar, however, felt lacking compared to what I’m used to from Kerala, consisting mostly of thin broth with few vegetables.
My fiancée’s Kathiyawadi Thali arrived in an impressive traditional presentation with multiple curries in small metal bowls. While visually appealing, the flavors didn’t quite deliver as the curries were decent but unmemorable, leading her to eat less than half. This might have been partly due to having kulfi earlier, but nothing in the thali particularly stood out.
Overall, Chowpatty offers a pleasant dining experience with some clear highlights. The dosa was genuinely good, the space inviting, and the service excellent. While not every dish impressed, it’s a solid vegetarian option worth returning to. Next time I’d like to try their other dosa varieties or uttapam.
The restaurant shows promise, especially for those craving authentic South Indian flavors in a comfortable setting, though I’d recommend ordering chai hot and adjusting expectations for Cool Chai of you decide to go that route.
