I rarely leave negative reviews, but this recent experience at the Chipotle in downtown Brentwood was disappointing enough that I feel the store genuinely needs the feedback.
While my wife went inside to place our order, I stayed in the car. Within minutes she came back visibly frustrated and explained what had just happened — and after seeing the meals at home, I fully understand why.
We ordered two kids meals, which we get regularly at Chipotle locations all over the country. We know exactly what to expect: a spoonful of meat in one section, rice in another, beans in the third, plus the taco shells. What she was served today was nowhere close to a normal portion. Each compartment had less than half a spoonful — a few tiny pieces of meat, barely any rice, and a very small amount of beans. The trays looked almost empty.
When my wife politely asked if they could at least fill the spoon properly, the employee looked to the manager. The manager turned around and said they had to “portion the food” and that this was the correct portion. She also added something my wife and I have never heard before at any Chipotle:
“This is our standard to-go portion.”
I honestly don’t understand this. A portion is a portion — whether the meal is eaten in the restaurant or taken home. We’ve never had a Chipotle say a to-go kids meal is intentionally smaller.
It didn’t end there. My wife then asked for a little sour cream for the kids’ meals — something we’ve never once been charged for in years of getting Chipotle around the country. The manager told her she would have to charge for it because “kids meals don’t come with sour cream.” The charge ended up being $3.71 for two small sides, which was surprising given the size of the meals themselves.
What made the interaction even more frustrating is that the manager added that she was supposed to charge my wife for the sour cream that came with her own adult meal — even though she simply asked to have it on the side so the food wouldn’t get soggy on the drive home. Again, something we’ve never once been charged for elsewhere.
When we got home, our kids opened their meals and immediately asked why “there’s no food in here.” And honestly, from looking at the trays, I can’t blame them.
I want to be clear:
We love Chipotle. 99% of the time we have a positive experience, and that’s why this stood out so much. We care about these businesses, and we want them to succeed. But this level of portion reduction, the refusal to correct clearly under-filled kids meals, and the unexpected charges for basic items like sour cream are the kinds of things that can drive loyal customers away.
I’m not sure if this store is following a different policy or if this was an unusual day, but today’s experience was by far one of the most disappointing we’ve ever had at a Chipotle. I hope management will take this as constructive feedback and review their portioning practices and customer service approach. Families shouldn’t feel like they’re paying full price for half a meal — especially not for kids.
When my food got stolen, they made me a new bowl promptly.
Thank you!

They offered me a free bag of chips before I left for the inconvenience.
When I got home my orders were completely wrong. I have dietary restrictions. There was cheese on my salad and white rice. They was no guacamole which I paid for. The other order had no chicken added to it.
