My daughter and I decided to try this joint out for lunch. They serve dim sum throughout the day so it was a win win situation. Most dim sum is in the morning so the fact we can have it for lunch was great.
Walking in, I expected the joint to be nicer. Not necessarily top of the line but nicer. It was dull, crowded and dated. The lady behind the counter guided us to our table. We did breeze over the menu but I already knew what we wanted.
We ordered a handful a handful of things. It all looked good on the menu and these were some of my favorite dishes growing up. Black bean spareribs, shu mai, haw gow, taro cake, lotus leaf sticky rice, bean curd with meat in the middle and long rice noodle with shrimp.
Everything is pre made and sitting in a steamer bath. I would have been willing to wait for the dim sum to be made fresh instead of it just sitting around staying warm. Honestly, if I would have known that they were pre made, I probably wouldn’t have come.
The black bean spareribs were fatty and lacking black bean. The long rice noodles were already sauced so the sauce was thick and dry on the noodles already. The haw gaw was cold. The clear wrapping on the haw gow is my favorite and it was tough. The stuffed bean curd was pretty bland. The lotus leaf with sticky rice was good! It was hot and the filling was savory to the sticky rice. The shu mai was savory. The only thing that was honestly cooked cooked was the taro cake. It was actually steamed and then grilled. It was really good! I love the crunchy exterior and the soft middle.
Half of the food was good and the other half was so disappointing. As dated as this joint is, I know places that look dated can produce some of the best food! I was hoping that this was going to be the case but it wasn’t. Service was basic. It was uncomfortably warm inside the venue today. I’m happy I got to try it out but I don’t see myself coming back for a second round.
Pretty fair price for how much food we got. Also this time, maybe 60% of the seats were full so maybe good time to go is during weekdays before people are off work
My parents and I will be coming back!
BUT….nothing else was.
These are the things that will keep me from dining here again. I ordered a lunch special, Sweet & Sour Chicken, and my spouse chose an entree. Our tea was served, looseleaf, no strainer. 20 mins later, my chicken was served. Then my soup, finally. And then we were told they were out of pork for my spouse’s entree. He quickly made a new choice, but we waited 20 more mins for his food to be served. Entrees dont come with soup, so he got nothing while he waited. (There were 6 people, including us, on a Friday at noon, so they weren’t too busy)
There were no apologies offered. No offer of soup or anything to make up for the wait and inconvenience. My spouse had to watch me eat my entire meal before he got ANYTHING. I shared, but that’s not quite the lunch date experience we were looking for. The waitress is inexperienced and inattentive. We paid full price and left frustrated because it took twice as long to get food, and we had been hungry when we arrived. But the food was AMAZING! So you decide if its worth it to you…..theres literally a dozen other choices nearby…..
I plan to come back and order a rice casserole dish. A friend ordered one and shared it. Everything was good and made from scratch. Recommend ordering the pork sticky buns.
