In visiting my college student. Great environment. Fellow diners were all calm and enjoying their foods. The little kid that was part of the kitchen family that sat in the dining area is really well behaved, respectful when told to do anything. Our food was delivered at a short time (within 10 min) & was so yum! I had the chicken and broccoli and my son had the Kung pao chicken platter. Definitely recommend this place. Thank you!

The Chicken Lo Mein was really delicious! There was plenty of chicken and vegetables, and it even came with rice. For only a little over $8, the portion and quality are amazing. Great value and very tasty. I’ll definitely come back!

I placed an order for a small sesame chicken and the serving size was very large and great priced. Food was absolutely delicious. Employees were kind and brought out the food super quick. I will be coming back very soon with friends.

China Star is a classic college-town food spot. I had the General Tso’s chicken and pork lo mein—both were excellent. The fried rice was more middle-of-the-road. The atmosphere is a little outdated and run down, but the prices are very affordable. Overall, I’d definitely eat here again.

Lunch 01/20/2026. The lady at the counter was kind, but the food experience was bad. My rangoons tasted like BBQ (old oil maybe? Cross contamination?). The sesame chicken and generals chicken were both tough and chewy. The chicken in the fried rice seemed boiled and unflavored. I was disappointed by the low quality because I was told by word of mouth that this is a tasty restaurant. The prices were cheap for Chinese food, which is nice. I did like the option to have a can of soda. Atmosphere was okay. My table was clean.

A small size restaurant inside the old capitol mall. The dining room seems to be a little outdated and chairs were a little wobbly, but not unbearable.
On the wall near the cash register is what appears to be a 120 item chinese menu. There is also a full size English menu, but different items.
I had the garlic chicken combo extra spicy.
The food had great flavor and the heat level was surprisingly increased. This was a highlight of the meal already.
Chicken was juicy and full of flavor
The vegetables in the dish were cooked well, not hard and crunchy
the rice was cooked perfectly and not hard at all
The combo also includes a delicious egg roll!
Side of crab Rangoons: nice and hot with a moderate size filling. Mainly cream cheese with hints of the crab.
Complimentary hot tea and water
Nice and quick service. I think I will try one of the items on the wall or the hot pot next time!

All good to me. Echo the man that serviced my order did a great job! It was a good experience. I got to hear his story coming from Bejing to America. I would encourage you to consider dining here if you’d like Chinese

China Star is absolutely amazing! The food is always hot, fresh, and full of flavor. The staff are super friendly and make you feel welcome every time. My favorites are the orange chicken and lo mein — so delicious! Highly recommend this place to anyone who loves authentic Chinese food.

There’s something for everyone here, but here’s my recommendations if you like spicy food:
辣子鸡 Chicken with Red Pepper (No bones.)
1茄子炒豆角 Fried green beans with eggplant
手撕包菜 Shredded Cabbage Shousibao
Be warned these three dishes are nice and hot with lots of numbing pepper, if you’re into that kind of thing. Also their steamed dumplings are great!

I’ve been coming to China Star in Iowa City for years, and it never disappoints. The food quality is always consistent, and the owners are the kindest people — they remember your favorite dishes and make you feel like family. It’s the kind of small business that deserves all the love and support.
