The food was not very good, birria broth is overly salty and thin. It’s $6 for a tiny scoop of rice and beans. The black beans tasted like they came out of a can and were heated.
I would suggest driving down the road to tally taco truck or Taco Miranda, they are both less expensive and taste much better than this location.
Maybe the Tennessee food truck location is better but I would avoid going to the mall location.
The fresh made beans still didn’t taste very good and don’t feel like a value at $3 for 1/4 cup. The plate pictured was $14, not showing the cup of birria consume that was $2.
There are plenty of better authentic Mexican restaurants and food trucks on the parkway.
Ive not had anything that wasnt tastu a d seen so.e dishes I want to try next.
The food is the star here. Many dishes are clearly made with care and depth of flavor you don’t always find at casual taquerias. Standout items include the birria tacos, birria pizza, al pastor burrito, chilaquiles, quesabirria, pozole, enchiladas with mole, and handmade tortillas. When the flavors hit, they really hit rich broths, bold sauces, tender meats, and satisfying portions at reasonable prices. Several dishes genuinely feel closer to what you’d find in parts of Mexico or California than typical Tex-Mex.
The menu also offers variety you don’t usually see at a food truck, including lengua, tripe, beef cheek, lamb, and mole-based dishes. This makes it especially appealing to adventurous eaters or anyone looking for something beyond basic tacos. Vegetarians can also find accommodating options, which is appreciated.
That said, consistency can vary slightly depending on the dish and visit. A few guests mentioned overly salty or thinner broths, occasional fatty cuts in birria, or flavors that didn’t quite live up to expectations compared to previous experiences. These don’t appear to be the norm, but they do happen and when expectations are high, those moments stand out.
The setting adds to the experience, especially at the original food truck park. Covered picnic tables, large fans, shaded seating, and an eclectic crowd create a laid-back, community vibe. It’s casual, lively, and feels authentic rather than polished. At the mall location, the experience is more streamlined and convenient, though it naturally lacks some of the charm of the outdoor setup.
Service is generally fast and friendly, with food often coming out surprisingly quickly. Staff interactions are usually positive, and the owner is notably active and responsive to feedback—both positive and negative which speaks well of how much they care about the business. On rare occasions, small service hiccups are mentioned (sauce portions, order clarification, or minor cleanliness issues), but these seem to be exceptions rather than patterns.
Value is another strong point. Portions are generous, pricing is fair, and many guests say they’d gladly pay more for the quality they’re getting. A few items can feel slightly pricey when expectations aren’t fully met, but most meals deliver excellent bang for the buck.
Why not 5 stars?
Chile & Chili’s is excellent overall, but occasional inconsistencies in seasoning, portion balance (especially fat-to-meat ratios in birria), and minor service details keep it just shy of perfection. Tightening consistency across all dishes and visits would easily push it into five-star territory.
Final Verdict:
Chile & Chili’s is one of the best spots in Tallahassee for authentic, bold Mexican food, especially if you love birria, chilaquiles, and traditional preparations. It’s casual, flavorful, and memorable absolutely worth repeat visits.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)
Outstanding flavor and authenticity with minor room for consistency improvements.
