When I walked into the store, I was met by a young woman (possibly Hispanic, with a long braid). Her greeting was noticeably unfriendly, and her tone was curt when I stated I was there for a pickup order. She responded that they were still working on it, but the issue wasn’t the message—it was the attitude behind it.
As I waited, I observed the same employee interact with the customer behind me, a white male. She greeted him warmly with a smile and asked how he was doing, then politely asked whether his order was for dine-in or pickup. This made it very clear that she was capable of offering respectful customer service, but chose not to extend that same courtesy to me.
It’s often difficult as an African American to call out these moments, because bias expressed through tone and demeanor is subtle and easy to dismiss. But it happens too often to stay silent. No one should feel like their money, presence, or dignity is worth less than someone else’s.
I normally avoid fast food for reasons like this, but my mother was in the hospital nearby and wanted something to eat after we’d been in the ER since early this morning. Even in stressful circumstances, no customer should have to experience this kind of disparity.
I hope management will address this and ensure employees treat all customers with equal respect, regardless of race or ethnicity. Everyone deserves fair and courteous service. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I will not be returning to this location.
