Finally decided to try this restaurant. Wish we hadn’t. The food was below par for French cuisine. The wait staff was pleasant enough and the atmosphere was quaint if a bit dated. Dishes ordered: appetizers crab cake and scallops. Crab cake was ok but lacked some flavor. Scallops were very small as if they’d been halved before cooking. Decent flavor though. Main course salmon in butter sauce with mashed potatoes and candied carrots & braised beef short ribs same sides. Presentation was alright… both mashed potatoes were horribly prepared. Waitress stated the chef was new and poured the cream way too fast. Very runny and lacked any flavors I could even taste. The candied carrots were not candied just boiled with a pinch of sugar. Main dishes: salmon was cooked properly but lacked any flavor other than butter we could detect. The braised short ribs were in an overly scorched in red wine sauce that was not seasoned well. Two peices of ribs were also a bit tougher than the others. Waitress gave us a complimentary plate of shrimp and mushrooms and dessert as well trying to make up for the meal. Those were actually good. Overall I’d say new chef hasn’t quite got the hang of it just yet or had a very bad night. Do not recommend personally. Bill was around $200.00.

Why haven’t we been here before? We found Chez Yasu by looking for restaurants in Topeka. This one is well off the beaten path and it’s camouflaged within a residential area. Don’t let the outside appearance of the building fool you, there’s delicious French cuisine inside. Seating is limited as are the hours of operation. We got lucky that it was a slow day and we did not need reservations. The food had good flavor and the service was great. We ordered the lamb chops and the beef ribs with a couple of drinks. We will keep Chez Yasu in mind when we return to Topeka.

This is a favorite restaurant of ours for special occasions, and we always enjoy it very much. Last Thursday, we had reserved a table for the earliest time possible, in order to get to a concert on time. When we arrived 15 minutes early, the hostess explained they were not quite ready to serve. Yet, we were immediately offered our choice of table and a wine menu (as opposed to being seated in the foyer until our reservation time). I really appreciated the gracious welcome. The beef bourguignon was not ready yet so I chose the seafood crepe, which I can highly recommend. We also really enjoy the duck, because there are only a few places that we know of that prepare it well.

This was a wonderful find! The rack of lamb was amazing, the scallops were perfect, even the carrots and rice had surprisingly great flavors. The owner was very pleasant to us. We will be back often. See you there!

Was our first time visiting. For the money spent the food, both portion and quantity, just wasn’t there. Good people and nice place but probably won’t return.

I’ve been fortunate enough to visit France on a number of occasions and can attest to both the authenticity and quality of this little gem in the middle of Kansas. If you are swinging through Topeka (or live there), this is a must.

I visit Topeka often to see my mom, and we’ve eaten at Chez Yasu with family 5-10 times in the last 10 years. The menu is small and does not vary much, but it is decidedly French and the preparation is consistently very good. Salads are fresh, the fish (almost always including salmon) nicely done, the wine list quite adequate, and the value high. Service is friendly and just a bit elegant. This can be a “special occasion” place, with white tablecloths and pleasantly “dressy casual” decor. But it can also be a nice place for a more casual lunch or dinner. I would say it is ideal for a couple, or a few friends, and can handle a larger family group. A Topeka treat!

I had a fantastic meal. Reasonably priced for the quality of the food. Beautiful presentation on the desert as well. Highly recommended.

I had the escargot. It was served in a garlic butter sauce, as it usually is, and only came with maybe 4 or so escargots. A bit salty and a bit over priced, but it was still good. Upscale restaurant, maybe a good place to take a girl you are looking to impress by blowing money on. Don’t be fooled by the exterior, the inside is actually pretty nice. The bread was phenomenal and reasonably priced, I would suggest getting lots of that.
