Casual red and yellow decor in friendly bistro offering French classics and set lunch menu deals.

There was a queue outside this restaurant before it even opened and I completely understand why. The most quaintly decorated yet beautifully bustling French bistro. Chez Jules is astoundingly perfect in every sense of the word. The staff are the friendliest, super attentive and informative, bringing efficiency and fun to the whole atmosphere. They have a great lunch deal 1 plate for £9.90/ 2 plates for £12.90 and 3 for £15.90. My family went for 2 plates getting French onion soup starter and mussels with chips and myself off the deal getting French onion soup and rump steak that comes with potato dauphinoise. The soup was rich, Gruyère cheese had a sensational pull. The mussels full of flavour in that incredible jus with the crispiest French fries and garlic aioli dip. The steak was a perfect pink, juicy and tender and the potato dauphinois creamy with perfect seasoning. A must go to in Edinburgh.

Chez Jules instantly transports you to a convivial Parisian bistro, and the hospitality starts the moment you sit down. We were delighted by the complimentary bread, savory salami, and wonderfully garlicky olives, along with fresh water.
The atmosphere is very cozy, romantic with dimmed lights, candles lit. It really sets the mood. I would recommend for dates but there were actually a lot of birthdays, families so it’s suitable for all kinds of special occasions or just a regular dinner out.
The food is magnificent, particularly the steaks. The 8oz Filet Mignon was tender and perfectly cooked, matched in quality by the excellent Steak Frites. For a starter, the frog legs are a must-try: deliciously cooked to perfection with a beautiful splash of garlic. The gratin dauphinois was also very creamy! (Could have been a bit saltier )
The exceptional service truly elevated the evening; the waiters were extremely attentive to my intolerance, handling my dietary restriction with professionalism and care.
Chez Jules is simply the best French dining experience in Edinburgh—highly recommended!
10/10!! btw I highly recommend to BOOK a table.

I went alone and enjoyed my experience. The staff was very nice and very quick to their feet too. Food was good but the steak wasn’t the best. Overall still a solid experience!

Overall, an inexpensive place for a very great deal. You can get an afternoon meal deal (entree, mains and desserts) for £15.90, which is definitely a bargain! The steak frites and french onion soup are probably their best sellers / iconic dishes. Needless to say, they were very delicious. The pate was also very tasty, and the portion sizes were generous.
Only downside of this restaurant is that it takes a while for them to notice you even if the restaurant is not that busy. We stood at the entrance for a while before the staff decided to help us, and even when ordering, the staff took a while before taking our orders.

Went on for lunch today and was thoroughly impressed from the moment we walked in: We were met by Carla at the host stand who was extremely friendly and professional, it was peak lunchtime with no current available tables for my girlfriend and I, but she was able to offer to put us on the waitlist and was seated less than half an hour later. It’s worth mentioning how hard working Carla is, non stop clearing tables, checking in with us – I’ve rarely witnessed such a fantastic work ethic and task managing, whilst still being able to manage the guest experience with ease. We were served by Charlotte who was also Fantastic- she was efficient yet very personable – it was a pleasure being served by her. The other staff we encountered (never got their names, tall French guy, and the gentleman serving our drinks) were also fantastic. We got the 3 course lunch deal for £15.60 which was fantastic value for money: We got the French onion soup to start, which was delicious, followed by the Steak Frites cooked medium rare (definitely the best way to have it). The steak was AMAZING! Decent thickness with tender centre and charred, crispy edges, topped with a home made peppercorn sauce (divine). We then shared the chocolate mousse which was so rich a creamy (we absolutely loved this). Overall a highly recommended, great experience for a quick lunch date with 5 star service (Seriously though, Carla needs some recognition for how hard she works in there, she has a real passion for the job). We will be back!!

Adore this cosy, homely feel restaurant. Always great quality food for great value. Their lunch deal is unbeatable in price and food quality.
My go to is always the french onion soup to start and steak frites main. Not had a bad visit yet.
It is very loud and tightly packed but that just adds to the charm of it.

For the lunch price the food is pretty great and the portions are big. If you don’t have a reservation I recommend going as soon as they open since a line forms pretty quickly. I must say, most people won’t book a table so it should be fine to show up at the opening. Also the service is pretty fast so that helps.
EDIT:
We came back to Edinburgh in February 2026 and this place is still as good. This time we tried the desserts too.
I recommend the pain perdu as it’s very similar to a french toast server with ice cream. The crepe suzanne is good as well if you like something citrusy and very sweet. I don’t recommend the chocolate mousse everyone raves about though…it’s just nothing special. Service is fast, this time we came with a reservation and I’d say it’s better.

Yes … it’s kinda noisy… but that is because it’s, deservedly, popular! Great value lunch menu which is highly recommended. Was particularly busy as Edinburgh Fringe but service was prompt, not very French, but appreciated with an itinerary.

my boyfriend had highly recommended this place and we finally had time to go! we just went with the two course lunch deal which is very well priced for what you get. we both got the french onion soup and steak/frites. the soup was very filling and was perfect meal to have on a cold day. the steak was nice and became perfect with the peppercorn sauce only thing i would say as the chips were very crunchy and difficult to chew but i put that more towards being one of the first customers so wasn’t a big deal! also appreciate the little plates brought out at beginnig of the meal as well as having pear cider on the drinks menu!! overall a great lunch and shout out to the staff for working so fast and in such a busy location!!
