We had a lovely dinner at Chex Bagou from every aspect. From a food perspective, yes, all dishes were great but we’d like to especially recommend the entrées. The crab & prawns ravioli was delicious and the seared scallops with cauliflower puree were devine. From the mains, we had the eye fillet which was perfectly grilled and the fish of the day was beautifully cooked and serverd with a mildly spicy falvoursome souce. Service was very friendly and warm. We are looking forward to coming back.

Visited for lunch on a weekend and tried a number of dishes. The French onion soup was tasty with the melty cheese but preferred if the bread was not completely soaked and soggy. The spinach ravioli was silky soft, and the porcini sauce with hazelnut has a rich depth of flavour, slightly earthy and nutty. The pan seared scallops were pretty big, cooked just enough to maintain the softness, and the leek fondue was light and buttery with a hint of sweetness from the leek. For mains, had the chicken vol au vent with spinach and morel sauce. The puff pastry was not the flakiest but was easy to cut and there was a generous amount of boneless chicken pieces which was tender. It was paired with spinach to soak up all the sauce which was full of flavour; rich and fatty with a concentrated savouriness. For dessert, the crepe suzette was flambéed tableside; it was soft and thin, and the orange sauce has a strong bittersweet liqueur taste followed by a sweet, zesty and buttery aftertaste. Overall enjoyed the meal, especially the sauces used in the dishes which were very tasty and flavoursome. Service was also good, the food was served in a timely manner even though it was busy.

Very nice food with an authentic French menu. You won’t be disappointed if you’re looking for a real French touch. The wine list is extensive, with a great selection of French wines. If you want a recommendation, the Lirac is a fantastic choice and pairs nicely with both red and white meat. You can also bring your own wine, which is a nice option. The onion soup was delicious and the tartare was very well prepared.
Just be aware they don’t have mayonnaise for the fries (French faux pas!) :p
Portions are generous, so you definitely won’t leave hungry. It was a shame we didn’t have room left for the tarte tatin for dessert.
The staff were really nice, fun, and very attentive.
High chairs available for babies and staff were very accommodating.
There is plenty of parking available around the restaurant, which makes it easy to come. Overall, a great spot for a relaxed and satisfying French meal.

I would recommend for a romantic dinner, or with friends 🙂

Scallops entree delicious otherwise I would only give 1 star. All four diners commented their sauces were too salty – spoiled the dish, my duck confit was a disgrace – lukewarm and the skin bland and not browned. Potatoes were left over from previous night – my opinion – while dish looked like it had been thrown together or microwaved- not returning – restaurant was half empty by 8:30 on a Friday – so that says it all when nearby places were buzzing. Agree with others on here – too much salt.

Our final meal in Melbourne and a good one at that. French bistro surrounds, a waiter from Brittany, some nice wine ftom Bourgogne and food heaven. What more do you want ?
Started with L’escargot and crusty bread. Hope you like garlic, very yum. My wife had her favourite foie gras. In France typically fried, not so here but received her seal of approval.
My wife went for a second entre of seared scallops ordered with a side of beans with garlic, she had a big smile thereafter.
My main was the chicken ballotine with veges served in a red wine jus. The sauce complimented the ballotine and hrrbs.
Problem eas no room for desserts which eas disappointing considering the offerings.
Highly recommended venue

Love the food and Robbie is a very friendly & attentive serveur. The beef bourginion was sensational & the steaks well cooked. Foie gras & soupe à l’oignon we’re very good entrées. The one addition to the menu that we’d love to see is potatoes dauphinois. We’ll be back soon.

I’ve visited here a few times both in summer and winter. Both a lovely vibe. It’s really nice to sit outside on a hot summers day and cosy inside during winter.

Typical French cuisine and wait staff are all French which of course adds to the ambience. The service was a little hit and miss tonight. I think one staff didn’t have much English but it came off as a bit rude initially. There may have been a couple of newbies. Always busy and packed with locals and regulars.

This time round we ordered for starters:
The mushroom truffle croquettes which had a texture like arancini balls and were cooked well. Crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. Can taste the truffle in the filling and the sauce on the side made it as otherwise it would have been a bit bland.

The crab ravioli and lobster bisque… this was my favorite dish! The bisque was out of this world so flavorful and the ravioli was melt in your mouth, I would have absolutely had this for starter and main course! It was SO GOOD!

For mains:
Steak tartare which was as it should be. Loved the presentation with the condiments on the side and egg on top. Was a nice touch to mix it together ourselves. The fries were hot and crispy.

The duck confit was tender and the red wine jus was delicious.. I wish there was more on the dish.

The Roquefort salad was delicious & fresh. The dressing was nice and zingy & was the perfect palate cleanser and accompaniment to our mains.

One of my favorite French restaurants in Melbourne. Would recommend if you are after some good hearty French cuisine.
