Listen- I love this place but it is one of the most frustrating establishments. Food is great usually but there’s always this looming “cutting corners” vibe.
I dined in about 2 weeks ago and I order the aloha plate bc that is easily 2 lunches. No issues on this visit- everything was great.
I grabbed a to-go order yesterday, thinking heck yeah food for tonight and a lunch for tomorrow. NOPE. To me, this does not equate to a nearly $20 meal. I had to double take bc there was no way this was the same thing I consistently order. Small container, mostly rice. Pretty disappointing.
Update: I did give an additional star as I truly believe my review was acknowledged and taken into account. I was advised to reach out via Fb and I quickly got a resolution. I went in, no questions asked besides my order, and had a discussion with the store manager. Very kind, very understanding. I am appreciative of the service I received as it was more than expected. Again, thank you for the hospitality, wishing the best, and I’ll be back.

We had an amazing meal. Dustin was extremely friendly. He explained everything on the menu and was very welcoming. Checked on us a couple times to make sure we had everything we needed. Portion size was more than enough. We get to enjoy the food again for lunch tomorrow. We will definitely be back!

We were fans of the old Zeke’s downtown, but hadn’t been to this newer location at Locust and Kimberly. To our delight, while the ownership and name have changed, it is run by one of Zeke’s chefs, Dustin, and my huli huli chicken was the same as I remembered it from years past — freaking delicious. The mac salad was exactly the same as well. I’m so glad that they have kept Zeke’s culinary magic intact. This is one of a few places where i will sit there in discomfort and continue forcing it down, even when i’m full and my gut wants me to stop. That’s how much I love that huli huli chicken, heat level at 7, with a side of sour cream to balance it out.

I had a lot of questions given that I’m gluten free and not super experienced with Caribbean food. The chef/manager was patient and happy to explain all the gluten free options (it’s mostly gluten free) and then dove further into what level of heat I might be comfortable with. The Caribbean jerk chicken rice bowl at a 6/7 with black beans and rice and calypso coleslaw is fantastic. Lots of flavor, perfect heat, and very filling. Wish I wasn’t from out-of-town because I would be back asap.

The service was wonderful and food came out pretty quickly. The atmosphere kind of feels like it could be dropped near a beach anywhere and it would fit in. My wife’s pork and my jerk chicken were both very salty. The pork was perfectly tender and the flavor (not the salt) on the jerk chicken was alright. The spicy BBQ sauce was unfortunately lacking in both flavor and spice. Maybe worth a visit again.

Great food with a fun island atmosphere. We got 4 different dishes and everyone was happy with their food. The pulled pork is simply out of this world. The shrimp tacos are stuffed almost to big to fit in your mouth. Can’t wait to try more stuff from here.

Chef’s Island Express is an absolute gem, delivering an incredible culinary experience that transports you straight to the Caribbean. From the moment you walk in, you’re met with the friendliest staff, whose genuine warmth and attentiveness make you feel right at home. They are happy to guide you through the menu, ensuring a wonderful experience from start to finish.
The food itself is nothing short of phenomenal. The Jamaican jerk chicken and Hawaiian rice are a standout combination, with the meat so tender it falls right off the bone. For the price, the portions are unbelievably generous—you’ll likely have enough for a second meal, making it an exceptional value. Every dish is fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection, capturing the authentic tastes of the islands. Whether you opt for a savory rice bowl or delicious jerk tacos, you can’t go wrong. The quality, taste, and cost-effectiveness of this place are truly unmatched.

Most unexpectedly!
The most often and repeated comments are that the portion are too big!
I do enjoy the flavor in the meat, for both the pulled pork and the combo plate!
It is a bit sweet, and savory sand even the smokes!

Great food, friendly service. A fair amount of options made it hard to decide. It all looked good. Delicious food with great flavor. I got the pulled pork rice bowl meal. Would like to try other entrees next time. I was very full and it was $20+tip for the meal and a drink. Reasonable pricing.
