On the positive side, most of the food tasted better than before and overall the flavors seemed improved. However, the pork fried rice had very little pork. Luckily, we had also ordered boneless spare ribs, and ended up using those ourselves to make up for the lack of pork in the fried rice.
The biggest challenge by far was the handling of pre-orders. We ordered four days in advance for a 6:00p pickup on New Year’s, yet we ended up standing in the very small pickup area until 8:25p. It became clear that pre-orders were kept in a plastic envelope and were not “started” until you arrived and said you were there.
If the concern was unpaid orders, that’s understandable but then payment should be required at the time of ordering, or at least clearly communicated. Under the previous owners, 6:00p pickup meant the food was ready at 6:00p, which set an expectation for those of us regularly ordering ahead.
Compounding the delays, the restaurant continued accepting new orders, including customized requests (such as no onions in fried rice), which further slowed the kitchen. Although Uber Eats appeared to have been shut off around 7:30 pm, there didn’t seem to be a clear or fair order sequence on how orders were completed, leaving those of us who had pre-ordered, waiting well over two hours.
I do want to express genuine sympathy and appreciation for the four staff members working that night. Despite the stress and some very angry customers, they maintained positive attitudes, which did not go unnoticed.
In summary, the food quality shows promise but the pre-order and pickup process needs major improvement. Clear prepayment policies should be established if that would help them expedite, realistic pickup windows and a defined system for order priority would go a long way, especially for long-time customers who want this new chapter to succeed.
Here’s to wishing them success and hoping this was a holiday-related growing pain and not the new normal.
The tofu was awful. It was not made properly. It definitely wasn’t General Gau’s. Instead of being a dark, thick, spicy sauce, it was a very watery, buttery- tasting sauce. It looked like a really watered- down apple sauce or something.
I couldn’t eat it, and my coworkers tried it and said it was awful. This was not General Gau’s! It was not even something close! So disappointing!
As an aside, the rice was dry and had a weird taste. I swear that there were a few pieces of meat in there, too.
