This is NOT Chef Chen. I feel like I’ve been duped. I went online to order Chef Chen and was automatically routed to this restaurant’s website. I ordered not paying attention. Went to go pick up my order, and still, something wasn’t clicking. I went inside and picked up my order. There was a different lady in there than the normal super nice lady who is always there. This was a younger woman who seemed a bit stressed out. I thought I heard her say to someone on the phone that there was a new owner. I now wonder if that person called to complain about the food because it is NOT the same. I was extremely disappointed. The only thing that was good were the steamed dumplings. I also ordered Mongolian beef, which was just mediocre. I ordered shrimp fried rice, which had some sort of off-putting taste. Couldn’t make out what that was, but I didn’t like it. I also ordered pork egg foo young, and it was bland. When I tried to order Chef Chen, there should have been something alerting me that they were closed and there is a new restaurant there now. I’m so pissed. I feel like I wasted $45! Maybe they will get it right, but today, the food ain’t good!
What really made my visit special was the owners. They were so sweet to my toddler and interacted with him the whole time. You don’t get that type of genuine attention everywhere, and as a mom, that meant a lot to me. It made the experience feel warm and personal.
I’m giving it 4 stars only because the place is a little old and could use some love when it comes to decor and furniture. But the food, service, and the way they treated my baby? Definitely worth coming back.
If you want good food that won’t break the bank and staff who actually care, Chef Chen is that spot.
On my quest for Asian cuisine I stumbled upon this restaurant, quietly tucked away in this mini strip mall. The outer appearance is quite deceptive, leading one to think this establishment may only host a few families at most, but once you enter you’ll find yourself in a spacious restaurant with dim/warm lighting and ambiance that modestly reinforces the culinary specialties.
Being one of two people in the restaurant during a midday meal, my service was quick. The staff were attentive and checked in quite often, but not an overwhelming amount.
I ordered the hot and sour soup. Which yes, was both those things, and held a great temperature warmth for a while. I then ordered what I remember to be the lunch special beef vegetable stir fry and was thoroughly pleased with the portion and the flavor. If you take your time and enjoy each bite you will have enough leftover to take so home. I also ordered a vegetarian meal of eggplant and rice for my family members, and they spoke highly of it.
They have staff that can also assist you si tú hablas español. I look forward to returning and having another meal here.
The staff is always friendly and they make you feel comfortable and at home.
Not only is my food always hot, it is always always tasty… I have never had a disappointing venture at this restaurant. All I can tell you is please try this place if you’re in the area and in the mood for Asian cuisine…
Best food ever…
1. Lack of transparency. This place is not the Chef Chen we all knew and loved. They have changed ownership and the whole name to Taste of China ( which is absolutely false) but they did not change the phone # so they have kept all the same customers.
2. The menu and what it delivers has changed significantly. Again, no transparency – tell somebody that 1 order of egg rolls = 1 egg roll. The old Chef Chen gave you two per order and they were fire. These were trash.
3. Great segue. The food was bland, tasteless, over-cooked, undercooked -my wontons in the wonton soup tasted like raw dough in my mouth.
4. My husband, upon exiting the restaurant to pick up our order, ran into two gentlemen inquiring if this was a good place to eat, to which he replied it was the best, been going here for years. He regrets giving them that feedback and apologizes if they are reading this. He says he was talking about Chef Chen…NOT Taste of China or whatever they’re calling themselves.
