My boyfriend and I have ordered take out and even eaten at Cheerful Garden before without a hitch… Sure, the food hasn’t ever been excellent but it’s the only Chinese Restaurant in town and it hasn’t been terrible in the past.
Unfortunately, our stop there today for a late lunch (maybe around 3:30) will likely be our last. As soon as we entered, the women behind the counter appeared to be annoyed, even angered by our presence. This, of course, did not change throughout the course of our meal. She barely gave us five minutes to decide what we’d like to eat. She bothered us a few minutes after sitting down, asking us curtly what we wanted. When we said we needed more time, she came back less than two minutes later to ask curtly again. Fortunately, we were and could stop her badgering. Despite this, we were always courteous, thanking her whenever she filled our glasses or brought us food.
Our appetizers came quickly and tasted fine, but the entrees took much longer and were luke-warm upon delivery. My boyfriend ordered orange chicken and I the sesame chicken. The meat must have been the lowest grade possible… it was very dark, stringy and chewy and the flavor was lack-luster. Lean Cuisine does a better sesame chicken.
As we were finishing up, an older (than us) couple came in to be seated and ordered their food. They received their food much quicker than us (within 15 minutes). We asked for boxes for our food as we don’t like to be wasteful. The woman took most of our plates, but we wanted the rice as well. As she walked away, a gentleman that worked there walked passed the older couple, greeted them kindly then continued on to us. He did not acknowledge us and, instead, gruffly grabbed our bowl of rice (and jammed his thumb into it in the process) and stalked off. Despite all of this, we still left a fair tip (25% of the meal). However, I regret it after we left and discussed it more. I am a fan of tipping. I like to be as generous as I can. Really good service gets a good tip from me. This service was the first time that I wish I had left the $0.25 snub tip. Too bad I can’t change that now.
Cheerful Garden is the only Chinese Restaurant in the town of Bristol. If you really don’t want to or can’t drive anywhere else you should probably just buy Chinese Cuisine at the Shop ‘n Save in town. Otherwise Fugaky on Tenney Mountain Highway in Plymouth will provide you with more choice, better service and better food for comparable prices. There’s probably some place else in New Hampton or Meredith, alternatively… we just rarely head that way. Whatever you do, don’t go to Cheerful (better known as Grumpy) Garden.
