Great spot for NY style pizza. Always has the classics and some fun, different options for slices. Crust is nice and crispy, sauce is flavorful, and ratio of toppings and cheese is good. Counter area is a little small, but you can take your slices to the brewery’s seating area next door or enjoy the outdoor tables on a nice day. Prices are fair and the staff is always so nice. Definitely recommend.

As someone who grew up in the NYC area, this is good pizza. I ordered a 18” soppressata and was satisfied by the quality of the pizza and the price of purchase. I have eaten at numerous other local pizza spots in Gresham/Troutdale/Fairview area….this is now my favorite.

Note: tight counter area, if busy, this could get crammed. The pizza place is located on the lower level, not the upper level near the side walk off 2nd.

This place is amazing. Im obsessed with their crust and this olive oil pickled veggies thing. I got the Brooklyn pizza no honey and added fresh basil. So delicious!

I’m not the biggest fan of New York style pizza for one big reason, usually just lacking flavor.
This pizza was good, cooked properly with a crispy undercarriage but overall just lacking flavor in the crust, sauce and cheese.
I had a higher expectation since this was from Ken Forkish.

Friends around town recommended Checkerboard Pizza knowing of my intense love of NY style pizza. It wasn’t exactly convenient location wise, but I wanted to try it and was delighted to find Checkerboard on GrubHub. One order and I was absolutely hooked. This stuff is stellar, everything about it is perfect and as close as you’re bound to get to NYC pizza west of Schenectady. Ok yeah pizza delivery, I mean the box doesn’t do the pie any favors, right? And since I’m a full 30 minute drive from the shop, reheating was always needed. Still, the best pizza I’ve had in years.
After several months of happily paying the premium for delivery, I finally made the trip out to the shop with friends from out of town. What a fun setup. Sure it’s a storefront pizza shop, no seating, no ambiance, but no worries because you have plenty of seating and great beer options just steps away, along with food carts to satisfy every single one of your picky guests’ whims. And ice cream right next door!
Ultimately though the star of the show is the owner who loves making these delicious pies. Pretty old school food guy, you can really tell by watching him make the pies in the back that this is a passion. I also read through some of these reviews and elsewhere and he really tries to ensure a great experience for everyone, which I truly appreciate.
Service was fast and prices are reasonable for the excellent quality. My only gripe is that there’s not a shop in my neighborhood, but truly worth the extra effort.

Best pizza in Portland, coming from a New Yorker. I love that they have a meat and separate veggie seasonal pizza. I also love their dried green chili pepper – such an addicting and spicy topping. Highly recommend!!

That’s Delicious! I ordered a pepperoni and sausage 18” pizza and an icy cola. The pie was thin and crispy with a thoughtful ratio of ingredients.
The pizza was cooked in a fancy oven that the baker was generous enough to give me a tour of. He was also very patient with all of my questions. Cooked to perfection with the wonder of modern technology!
I will be making a point of stopping anytime I’m on my way to the mountain or up to the Gorge for a show.
I’m glad that I saved some room for a cone from the ice cream place next door. They have their own homemade recipe soft serve that was super creamy.

Lots of places to sit outdoors and indoors at the Brewery. This pizza is amazing! 6 different kinds on display. The pizza has a wonderful thin crust with the perfect chew. Not many places around with this thin new york style slice, or ones that do pizza by the slice in general. I would recommend this pizza to anyone!
