Social Profile:

Charlie’s has long been a beloved Boston institution, first opening its doors in 1927 and standing as a proud landmark for over 98 years. Recognized with a prestigious James Beard Award for American Classics, it remains one of the city’s most cherished dining destinations. Notably, Charlie’s is one of the few restaurants in Boston still featured in the *Green Book*, the historic African American travel guide published during the Jim Crow era, offering a safe haven for travelers during the pre-Civil Rights Movement days. Charlie’s has been the go-to spot for some of the biggest names in music, sports, and entertainment. Legendary jazz musicians like Sammy Davis Jr., Duke Ellington, and Billie Holiday dined here, helping cement in history.

Tiny, no-nonsense 1927 landmark resurfaces, slinging turkey hash & breakfast & lunch diner classics.

Old style dinner type place with tables and counter stools. Established in 1927. Photos of famouse people who have visited over the years. Waitress was managing entire front of the house and was very pleasant. Food was good
Home made corned beef hash, eggs cooked to perfection. Prices I bit high. We prefer this kind of place, with lots vintage charm, over the chains.

We’d researched where to eat this evening (seeing a theme here?!) and a Google search of “best place to get a light meal near me” brought up Charlie’s, and after perusing the menu from other reviews, chose to head off for a Reuben and a steak and cheese sub.
On arriving at Charlie’s, we were immediately welcomed by Rebecca, greeting us like old friends even though we’d never set foot in the place before tonight. Seated quickly, we were given the menu and then a glass of ice water each whilst we decided what we wanted. As it was quite late already, I guess the Reuben wasn’t available as it wasn’t on the menu, so I’d opted for the eggs benedict, Daughter stuck with her choice of the steak and cheese sub.
Coffee and Cola arrived within a couple of minutes of ordering, then our meals not long afterwards.
I’m not at all sorry that I’d chosen the eggs benedict, cooked to perfection with a generous portion of the tastiest hash browns I think I’ve vlever had. Daughter’s sub was massive, with a good sized portion of hot, crispy/fluffy french fries.
Rebecca was attentive without being obtrusive, and the regular patrons were great to chat to.
If you’re in the Back Bay area of Boston, I’d absolutely recommend a visit to Charlie’s
(As an aside, when we were leaving, and taking time to thank the hostess, I’d mentioned that I’d really gone there for the Reuben, she told me I should have said, she would have made that for me!)

Classic diner dating back to the 1920s. It’s no frills but friendly service. The breakfast hits the spot everytime. Unlimited coffee refills. The turkey hash is incredible. They also offer great lunch options and a decent selection of cocktails.

Breakfast at Charlie’s Sandwich Shop was a lovely experience for our family. We spent a relaxed morning there with our son and enjoyed every bit of it. The veggie omelette and French toast were well made and satisfying, and the “Definitely the Coffee” was a unique and enjoyable drink. The atmosphere felt genuine and welcoming, making it a place we look forward to revisiting while we are in Boston

Cozy little diner with nostalgic decor and wonderful breakfast. Expect a slight wait on Sunday mornings, but if you’re not in a rush, this place will hit the spot for your good ole fashioned breakfast. Rebecca was very attentive and kept the waitlist moving.

my sisters and I went here yesterday (10/26) for lunch and had the best experience service and food wise, the wait was long cause it was very busy but our waiter (blonde with a ponytail, we didn‘t get her name) was so kind all the way and made sure we felt comfortable the whole time. this visit would‘ve been a straight 5/5 stars, which we reflected in our 25% tip. today on the otherhand the service provided by cathy was at first ok, although water, eggs and fruitcup were forgotten, which is not a big problem, we just asked for it again. we swapped some things which we were willing to pay for (swapped bread rolls, got salad instead of fries) one of my sisters got grilled cheese with tomato&avocado which was 17 on the menu. on the bill it was suddenly 22 in total (15 + 6 avocado +1 breadroll) (my chicken, bacon, avocado, cheese and lettuce was 19 make it make sense). we asked to pay the price stated on the menu as is the normal thing to do and the server said, the price on the menu is wrong. also the manager said avocado is 4 and our server cathy said it‘s 6 so I guess the prices are just made up. once again we were more than happy to pay extra for the salad adjustment and the breadroll but not a completely made up price for one of the dishes. we ended up not giving tip, which never do, cause we felt kind of scammed and the server and manager were also rude about. the server than commented that just because we don‘t agree with the prices doesn‘t mean we can‘t give tip to which I replied the service just wasn‘t that good (multiple forgotten items, not very friendly, mistake on the bill and charging different prices than stated on the menu). to end on a positive note, the server yesterday was great and the food was amazing both times.

True American Diner! Friendly staff, great food! Totally recommend the chicken salad club! Ask for chicken apple sausage if you get breakfast! Hashbrowns are superior to all other options!

I sat on the patio and had one of the best breakfasts I’ve had out in a long time! The hash browns were amazingggggg!!!! The French toast was also so good omggggg. I loved loved loved the food here! The sausages even surprised me with their complex flavor. I don’t usually like diner food, but I loved it and would love to go back! So so so good. The servers were nice too.

Food was good. I really was a fan of their home fries next time I would have to the hashbrowns. Eggs good and pancakes sooo good. Omelette was super good too. Most of all the diner has a great vibe, great feel would definitely come back.
