This cafe is a cozy place to chat, work, or read. I particularly appreciated the warmth of the woman who took my order. She spoke to me in a way that made me feel cared for as a person not simply a customer.

I had a coffee cake along with a specialty latte, the “Dirty Little 5-Spice”. At first, the drink had a subtle kick to it that I really enjoyed; however, it became unbearably sweet by the end— I wish the actual 5-spice flavor was a lot stronger without so much sugar. I’d like to come back sometime to try one of their regular coffees.

Our group of friends got 4 obscure drinks and all of them were delicious. They are creative and good at what they do. Most of the staff were super helpful and welcoming. An easy and fun walk in place. Lots of people working on laptops. Even durning the weekend. Love the logo and brand. Interior was a perfect blend of cafe and whiskey bar. I would recommend.

I LOVE IT. On Tuesday its Trivia night with some good music. Coffee is delicious as well as the expresso martini! They are so delicious. Love the vibes this coffee bar gives. Has Wi-fi as well and parking is great! I went here 4 times in one week when I first found out about it. They stay open late, I love that as well

Awesome coffee bar!! This local brewery sister property has house made spirits, baked goods and specialty coffee concoctions. Lots of natural light. Varied styles of seating creates options and character. BYOF — yes, you can bring your own food. Centrally located — parking can be tricky.

This place is incredible! Such a cool vibe inside the cafe. The coffees/teas, mocktails, and alcoholic beverages are all top tier. Their espresso martinis and hot chocolates are both I have never had a drink I didn’t like here. Trivia is also super fun, plus you can bring your own food from the outside. The staff are all extremely friendly. This is a great place to work during the day or grab a drink for date night. Don’t miss this awesome spot when you’re in Chestnut Hill!

Stopped in because I was intrigued by the barrel aged coffee option. The barrel aged latte was delicious! Service was a little slow but it was very busy in there. I hope to return to try some of the cocktails!

Yesterday, December 28th, at 5:10 PM, while working outside of Char & Stave in Chestnut Hill, my colleague and I decided to warm up for a short moment before going back outside to complete our work. After no more than 5 minutes inside and sitting on the stools set up at the window to the immediate left as you walk in, we were approached by the manager, Kim. I had seen Kim earlier in the day, around 3 PM, when I purchased and enjoyed my favorite, the Whiskey Smash Latte with Oat Milk, during my Lunch break. At first, I thought she was offering us drinks, which many businesses do because they see we work outside, but it quickly became clear that she was telling us to buy a drink or leave. Her tone and physical behavior intensified as we remained seated on the stools, and I told her I was “offended and insulted.” She then walked the path of dishonesty by telling us the bartender had told her we had been there for an hour. Completely false. We had been inside for only 5 minutes at that point to warm up, which I made known and clear to Kim. I also noted that we were there earlier for lunch and even reminded Kim of a friendly, light exchange we had when I was leaving the restrooms, which she remembered. She looked at her watch and told me that that was two hours ago. I told her that a purchase in a day makes a friend for the day, and that what she’s doing does not support or build a culture of friendship with the community it serves. She became flippant and dismissive, degraded me by referring to me as “sweetheart,” (which would be sexist if I dared to utter those words towards her, and I let her know that) and even interrogated me as if I were not telling the truth about purchasing something earlier by asking who the bartender was that served me (mind you, I ordered a latte, not an alcoholic beverage), and told me that what she’s doing is policy, before threatening to call the cops on us for “refusing to leave.” My colleague spoke up and said that he would buy something like a Hot Chocolate. At that point, she hurriedly went to grab menus from the bar, came back over, and shoved them in front of us. I declined to take any because what Kim was doing was wrong. I told her that every time we work there, we have always been treated with grace by the employees, that we always purchase things, that I grew up in the area, and that I often frequent Char & Stave on my own and even picked up a bottle of Whiskey on Christmas Eve for Christmas Day. None of this mattered to Kim, which was odd. No, thank you. No, I hope you enjoyed the holiday. Nothing.

At 5:21 PM, when the conversation had exhausted itself, and I was not going to have my colleague purchase anything else, I embarrassingly stood up to leave. Kim had humiliated us, the only people of color–the only Black men–seated inside the establishment that I have always loved.

Kim did not portray the courtesy, respect, or sound judgment that is expected in a role such as hers. Her treatment of us was disheartening and unsettling, and it reflects poorly on the reputation of Char & Stave and the Chestnut Hill Business District.

When I’m in Chestnut Hill, I am reminded of my childhood. How my mother and father sent me to Catholic School at OMC. How family friends own businesses on the Avenue. How my father served this community for decades upon decades as an elected official. How I worked at a popular business on the Avenue once, and how not once have any of us ever been threatened with the cops being called on us, and on this occasion, simply for warming up. It is disgusting and appalling, to say the least, and truly makes one feel unwelcome at an establishment I have always adored. To add, when I suggested to Kim that I would no longer tell people to visit the establishment, she seemed unbothered and did not care.

Happy New Year,
James Holloway DeLeon

I’ve stopped in at the end of happy hour on a Friday and on a cloudy Saturday afternoon and Char & Stave was packed, yet welcoming as always! The location is great. The ambiance is cute yet laid back. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and pretty chill. The offerings are both classic and unique. The crowd is always quite mixed, but harmonious – kids to seniors and everyone in between. It feels like a place locals and tourists can enjoy together any day.

I’ve brought my tween along and he enjoyed the vibe. Recently, my son had a beignet from a local bakery supplied to Char & Stave and couldn’t say enough about it – fresh and delicious.

I highly recommend & will return.
