The pancakes are amazing. Plenty of seating. The wait staff are all lovely. The food is so good! And the prices are perfect too. Breakfast for two for $27?? You can’t find that anywhere anymore. What a great place!

My children and I were on a stop over in New Jersey recently, making our way back from a holiday in South Africa, when we needed breakfast as we tried to adjust to the time change. Central Restaurant was a little bit of a drive from our airport hotel (about 5 miles), but they were open at 6:00 am and the online menu showed promise. The restaurant is a neighborhood greasy spoon, with all the cast of characters you would expect of such a place. The owners are Greek transplants, the clientele is mostly the black neighbors who live nearby, a line up of police officers and construction workers waiting for to-go orders, and travelers like us who may or may not know what they are in for. I saw grits on the menu which told me everything I needed to know about this place. They did not disappoint. First thing – to the restroom. If it’s clean you know the kitchen will be in order also. It was tiny, but clean and smelled good. My son ordered the Denver omelet with grits, I ordered fish and grits, and my daughter ordered the French toast breakfast with a side of grits. The grits were on point – creamy with that pat of butter pooling on the top. The French toast was just the right amount of crunchy (on the edges) and tender with a tiny bit more cinnamon for enhanced flavor. The Denver omelet was well cooked with just a bit of browning on top, but a tender and medium soft interior. The fish was unexpected as it had a coating and it was fried. But, the exterior was crunchy with a flaky tender flesh interior. I can’t speak to the rest of the menu, but our orders were all A-plus calibre for a neighborhood greasy spoon. If you like this kind of atmosphere and breakfast food, don’t miss out if you happen to be in town!

My first time there this past Sat for breakfast with my partner who’s been there before. I was disappointed with the unfriendly vibe and quality of the food (my french toast was overcooked on one side, both our scrambled eggs were terrible, the grits & coffee were ok). For the money we paid, $40 including tip, there are much better places to eat for less. She says it was better years ago, we went to Ihop the week before and had a much better breakfast & service for $30 including tip (2 french toast value menu entrees w/ scrambled eggs sausage and coffee). Don’t think we’ll be going back, but on the upside we did get to meet Roxanne Shante who was seated behind us, that alone made it worthwhile

Ordered on door dash and they charged more after I placed the order. I had no special instructions or requests. Called them to ask why and no explanation. Asked them to cancel the order and they said they can’t. Which is a lie. Told them they can and they proceed to say “you can come here and do it”. Luckily door dash was able to cancel. Extremely rude and I’m sure their food isn’t worth it. Never again

A great Diner, amazing food, friendly staff and very reasonable prices. I tried multiple things on the menu, everything was great, fresh and hot, and plenty of it. Can’t wait to go back, sadly I’m from Indiana, so I might be a bit B4 I get there again.

Great food, reasonable prices, clean, and polite staff. What more could you ask for? Even my finicky teen ate every last bite, and they are generous with their portions!

This place came highly recommended by my boyfriend because he used to come here years. Maybe at one time the food was good but currently the food is a massive disappointment. I ordered salmon cakes and could’ve sworn these people gave me 2 fish filets from McDonald’s!!! It was absolutely disgusting!!! Very bready and barely a taste of salmon in it. The grits were clumpy and very obviously had bacon bits in it from mixing dirty spoons in the pot smdh. The eggs were as bland as the decor. I wouldn’t recommend this to ANYONE. Wth is this??? Clearly not a salmon cake. Hold my purse while I call restaurant impossible or Gordon Ramsey. Just horrible.

Love the charm of the place and of course the vast menu. The staff was really nice. It is rare to find a place that gives a good amount of food while staying light on your pocket. Keeping to 4 stars because there are limited vegetarian options, which is true to most American diners.

What a superb dinner / cafe / restaurant.
Does exactly what you would expect, very well.
Good solid food.
Fair prices.
Proper classic dinner feel.
No nonsense, no messing about.
Don’t listen to the (very few) negative reviews, listen to the (many) positive reviews.
If you are looking for “fancy smoked salmon with foie gras foam” don’t bother, it’s not that kind of place, come here instead for the pancakes, bacon and eggs, grits, coffee, milkshakes, ice cream, burger and fries and everything else on the menu.
This is my fave sport in Newark hands down.
I will be continuing my regular visits.
