Cayenne – Peoria
Peoria Heights restaurant announces sudden closure
Reviews
Cayenne had a nice decor and background music that wasn’t obnoxious. There’s a nice variety of tacos to choose from. During my meal I found out that there were only 2 guys for the entire front of the restaurant (making drinks, taking orders, serving, cleaning tables) on a Saturday. I’m thankful for the service, but hopefully it’s a more responsive place on normal nights.
We both enjoyed the $15 combo. 2 tacos and 1 side.
The street corn was FANTASTIC! We love trying different street corn. This one is one of our favorites.
Love the food and atmosphere. We will definitely be back!
All Tacos are grilled Soft Shell. Even my wife a Crunchy taco only type person loves it.
For starters we had the Trifecta which is Guacamole, salsa, and queso con chorizo. The salsa is ok nothing to great but not bad either. The Queso con chorizo is really good (i always mix in the chorizo). The star for this app is the Guacamole it is really good and the first one gone at our table.
My Stepson this time around tried the Philly Steak Taco- Grilled Steak (shredded) Queso Blanco, peppers and onions. When i asked him how his taco was knowing I was doing a review he pulls out some NYC style food snob critique which boils down to he really liked it a lot.
My Wife (Very Very picky eater) had the Tso Good Taco-General Tso Chicken, Asian slaw,Chopped peanuts, sriracha aioli. This taco’s name says it all Tso Good. In the words of my wife “It’s F***ing Delicious” she also going full NYC food snob with her professional critique of her food. This one is a truly must try.
Yours truly had 3 tacos Tso Good (my wife tried mine the first visit and got hooked) it has become one of my standard tacos i get every time. You Gotta Be Cuban Me taco- Braised pork (shredded),Crispy ham,Swiss , Cuban mayo, Pickle (diced into small pieces) this is my other must have taco every time i go. I’m not a big fan of pickles but the way they do it on this in a small sized diced is perfect so i even leave them on cause it doesn’t trigger my dislike for pickles actually it adds to the wonderful flavor of the Cuban. So those are my standard two tacos i get every time well for my third i try a new taco each time also. This time i had the Crabby Patty-Fried crad cake, pico de gallo, lettuce,Cajun remoulade. The crab cakes are nice crispy while being soft and tender with good flavor. Overall pretty good taco if you like crab cakes it’s a must try.
On previous visits i have tried the Mad Clucker- Fried chicken, buffalo sauce, lettuce, ranch, blue cheese crumbles. Feels like a standard buffalo chicken wrap feels kinda plain when next to most of the other tacos from the menu. I also have tried the CLT-Chicken, Crispy chicken skin, lettuce, tomato, avocado ranch. I wasn’t really a fan of this one the crispy skin was like minced up and tasted kind burnt and i just didn’t like the avocado ranch.
Dessert we had the Caramel Apple Chimicheesecake. chimichanga filled with cheesecake deep fried covered in cinnamon and sugar over a apple pie type filling with caramel sauce and a “healthy” portion of whipped topping. It’s my wife’s favorite to where we have even gone there just for dessert. It’s really good however i think i would like the apples hot instead of a room temperature or whatever they keep them at.
The Damage for three people our total came to $51.71 which is fair for all we got and all three of us left full and very happy.
The Service has been absolutely amazing every time we have been there. The staff is awesome at helping you figure out the menu and what you would like to try. They are on point with drink refills and getting finished plates out of the way.
Overall Cayenne is a must try. The decor is cool with it’s Dia de los Muertos type theme and the artwork all over is really neat.
The decor on the inside is nothing shy of creative and fun. I would say it’s reminiscent of El dia de Los Muertos while still trying to be cozy and modern. Upon walking in, you’ll be greeted by the host/hostess and led to your table. The appetizers are your typical tex-mex assortment (see the menu online for more details). But if you’ve found Cayenne by searching for a new restaurant to explore, chances are you’re not here for the appetizers. The taco menu had a wide variety of choices sure to suit anyone looking for something unique. They even have options for vegans which I loved(disclaimer: I’m not vegan but like to note that since people often confuse vegetarian options with vegan options). I’ve attached a couple pictures of food. One is an assortment of their special tacos and the other is their style of taco salad. The drink is a regular lime margarita. This one is on the rocks but you can ask to have it frozen since they’re all made to order.
The service was fairly quick both times for how busy it was. I should say I wouldn’t expect to be in and out during the dinner hours even with this being a taco joint. For a party of 4 with appetizers and no dessert, we were there for just about 1.5 hours.
The heights is a great area to spend time and explore if you’ve never been and Cayenne just adds to the adventure with some really great food choices that offers a fun little atmosphere.
All-in, I would absolutely recommend this restaurant and quite honestly, this place definitely makes the top 15 list of best places to eat in Peoria (and Peoria is not short on one-off restaurants).
