Reviews
There was plenty of food, and the whole thing was just $34. A bargain. The lasagna was delicious and enough for us both, come dinner time. I highly recommend this place. It has that old-world charm and if you close your eyes and smell, you feel like you are somewhere in Sicily.
Sausage & Peppers could’ve used more Peppers (there was only one slice).
Yup.
We found this place randomly on Google Maps after some mountain biking in the area and we are so happy we did. Great food, great service and great vibe. I love that you don’t have to get a large.. you can get a small and add meat by the $.. PERFECT for when you want the protein but not all the bread. Our sandwiches were perfect. We will DEFINITELY be going back the next time we ride in the area.
Atmosphere: This is an italian deli through and through, big bonus is all the old dodgers memorabilia everywhere, bobbleheads, signs awesome!
Food:
Meatball Sub – I dare say this is the best meatball sub anywhere. The soft fresh bread and incredibly juicy and tasty meatballs and the perfectly tangy sauce. Add some pepperoncini’s and this is a meatball sub that can’t be beat.
Cannolis – Fresh made both large and small sizes a must eat.
Cookies – All kinds of cookies and cakes all are fresh and all are delicious
Macaroni salad – very good, a bit on the sweet side I could see people going either way on this but I love it.
Big menu, You can easily find anything you like here.
Sauce Tip: Extra Italian on regular sandwich or Sauce on the meatball
Drinks:
Every canned or bottled drink you could think of. tons of fridges fully stocked
Price:
Very affordable, the meatball comes in at $9.95 for a small, more then enough just add a pack of chips.
Parking:
They have a lot in the back entrance with 5 or 6 spots. Meters in the front and side street. Go a couple of feet towards the neighborhood and avoid the meters for free.
Service:
Extremely friendly staff. They are ALWAYS busy but they get to you quick. The number system is tried and true and works very well here.
Easily the best place for a deli style sandwich in the Valley. puts the rest of the options to shame.
I had heard glowing reviews about Cavaretta’s Italian Deli, so I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, my visit left me more disappointed than delighted.
Sandwich Letdown
I ordered the Corned Beef & Pastrami Sandwich with the works, expecting a hearty, flavorful bite. Instead, I waited over 30 minutes for a sandwich that was dry, bland, and overwhelmingly bready. There were no bread options, just a plain white Italian loaf that lacked character and taste. The meat was sparse, the condiments nearly nonexistent, and the overall balance was off. It felt like eating a loaf with a hint of deli.
Cookie Confusion
I also ordered half a pound of Italian Wedding Cookies, but was mistakenly given sprinkle cookies instead. To make matters worse, they tasted stale, at least two days past their prime. This mix-up and lack of freshness added to the frustration.
Spumoni Redemption
The one saving grace was the Spumoni Ice Cream, prepackaged from Brothers’ Company. It was rich, flavorful, and exactly what I hoped for. If you’re stopping by, this might be the only item worth grabbing.
Timing & Setup
I visited around 4:30 PM, and it seemed like the food had been sitting out all day. Perhaps an earlier visit would yield better results. Also, the store layout is inefficient; servers constantly run up and down, and into one another in the prep line, which slows everything down. A streamlined setup, like what chains such as Subway use, could drastically improve service speed and consistency.
Final Thoughts
Cavaretta’s has potential, but my experience was marred by poor execution and stale offerings. If you go, call ahead and aim for an earlier time slot. And definitely grab the Spumoni.
