This is a really good place to go if you want really good home cooking. It feels like Grandma is in the kitchen. We had the pot roast, chicken fried steak and the lemon chicken. Fantastic green beans. Good cole slaw. And the home made rolls are to die for. Love that they offer half order or full. The half was plenty for us.

We ended up here as a 2nd choice because the other restaurant we had picked out was closed for the 4th of July weekend, and we were very happy! The prices are very reasonable and the food is plentiful and delicious. We ordered the chicken strips(5 piece), large dinner salad, and the pot roast (had I known it came with potatoes and carrots, I would have picked a different side). The homemade rolls are also very very good. I know if we ever make it through Hays again, we will stop here. I am not sure about desserts, did not ask because we were too full from dinner and I took enough pot roast home for lunch.

Small town mom & pop place. Just like what we look for when we go out & get away. Staff was amazing. There is seating both inside & out. Our staffy was allowed to sit with us at an outside table.

Disappointed.. the ribs looking delicious but tasted like they’d been boiled then smothered in BBQ sauce. Sadly, flavorless.
Chicken fried steak gravy was great.. couldn’t find much chicken inside the breading sadly. Such a bummer.

Stopped in while traveling I70 and googling restaurants. Thought food sounded good. Good location. Service was slow. Waitress didn’t know what the sides were, or how many came with meals or which meals had sides. Also wasn’t sure what drinks they had and brought a wrong drink out. Food come out fairly quick and was piping hot. Chicken strips were flat so not alot of meat but tasted OK and so were fries. Corn was alright. Lemonade was good. The chicken fried steak meal with mashed potatoes was good and the fried okra was cooked perfectly. Sweet tea could have been sweeter but I am from the south. Overall I can see why local workers would eat lunch here but I would suggest something else if you’re traveling through and want to set down and enjoy a good meal.

We visit often because it’s one of the few restaurants that has something my husband can eat due to allergies. He always gets the full pot roast and it’s good for several meals for him. (It comes with sides but he always gets more carrots and potatoes from the pot instead since that’s safe for him.) I often get the meatloaf and love their fries and fried okra. Today I got the Tuesday spaghetti special. I got the large so I can have leftovers the next day but they brought me the biggest pile of spaghetti I’ve ever been served. It’s very basic grandma style spaghetti with meat sauce. (I pick out the big mushrooms because I’m not a fan.) It was pretty much what I expected and I was very happy. If you want grandmas Midwestern kitchen, this is the place for you. It’s more affordable than many places. Very casual but comfortable. Doesn’t get too loud. We go when it’s slower usually so the service is always really fast. We’ve also done pick up at the window. Pure comfort food. If I could change one thing it would be REAL butter for the fresh homemade rolls, please! I really want to try the epic onion rings next time.

Awesome food and fair prices for quality of food. Ribeye and catfish dinner was a little over $60, so definitely not upset. Food was cooked perfectly and served piping hot. Server was very polite and prompt. Even as restaurant was staying to get busy, our server still kept up and didn’t leave us waiting. I highly recommend trying Cattlemans Cafe Hays.

They weren’t busy when we arrived so service was fast, they were friendly and pretty knowledgeable about the food and portions. The food came out quick and hot. I had the chicken fried chicken, the gravy was okay but not my favorite I prefer the “chicken” flavored sauce, the brown gravy and mashed potatoes was good, had to add some salt to the chicken otherwise it was tender, the fried skin was different, thinner but not bad. The marinara for the meatloaf was more like tomato sauce so that could use work otherwise the meatloaf itself was good. The portions of food you get for the price paid is fair and overall the experience was very good, I will visit again.
