I had the Birria Ramen, a good portion of savory meaty birria broth served on a bowl with onions and salsa on the side. Small place, you order before you seat at the cashier’s stand, when your order is ready the attendant takes the food to your table, not much interaction after that. 24th Street and Mission, Bart station. The area is very sketchy, lots of people participating in illicit transactions steps away from the entrance.

Whoever came up with puffy tacos needs a Nobel Peace Prize; in this case, it’s the titular countess (condesa), the namesake of this hole-in-the-wall mom-and-pop shop.

Hyphenations aside, the puffy taco was so unique and complimented the soft insides of the birria well, with the accompanying salsa rojo being the best I’ve ever had. The quesa birria was pretty good too, but if I were to come back, I’d try other stuff, like the plates and tortas.

The ladies working the kitchen and counter were very friendly. I look forward to coming back when I wake up from the food coma.

Very good food. Excellent flavour and well prepared.

Very friendly staff.

Exactly the type of food you expect in a locally owned restaurant.

Highly recommend

Nestled between a bodega and a frutería on the always vibrant Mission Street, you’ll find the unassuming Casa de la Condesa. The air is thick with the dramatic tones of a Mexican soap opera blaring from the TV, and I’m the only gringo in sight—a sure sign I’ve made the right choice for my inaugural taco birria experience.

Yes, I admit it: this is my first time eating taco birria. But if you’re going to lose your birria virginity, this is the place to do it. The consommé hits first, a robust, beefy broth spiked with raw onion and cilantro, a punch of flavor that wakes up your senses.

The taco itself is a marvel of simplicity and indulgence. Soft, shredded beef piled generously inside a tortilla that’s been lightly fried to perfection—crispy on the outside, yet soft and inviting within. The raw onions add a sharp counterpoint to the savory, salty meat. And the salsa roja is probably the best I’ve had. I’ll be sure to add vinegar to my personal recipe.

Crispy puffy tacos. Perfect balance of meats & veggies. Always happy after a meal here. The restaurant is small with minimal-none decor, but always clean & the foods are delicious. The foods are best to eat right away so highly recommend dine-in.

Just changed my one star to five start review for the great business attitude of Carlos, the person and worker, who manages the place.
He Owned the mistake took place immediately the information got to him, I really appreciate it, and not just refund my order, but went further and refunded my lyft I took by sending me, not my first at this place, California burrito, the exact one I came back for at the first place. It took half hour from the first review to the replacement been delivered. It’s just me who just clocked out and gave time to write. I appreciate your business and efforts. Will definitely keep supporting and spreading good word. Thank you, it was delicious!

NIOSA – Night in ol’ San Antonio! House/pet sitting in SF, was surprised to find San Antonio puffy tacos!! Love these from when I lived in SA-TX for 3 years back in the 1990s. The puffy shells were slightly over-cooked, but still tasty. The picadillo and fillings very delicious. Rice and beans were excellent, not over salted. My second time having them and will always get them whenever in SF.
