Reviews
The menu is a bit of a mishmash of different styles, and we do find ourselves wishing it were just a little more adventurous, but everything we’ve tried has been solid. The short ribs with mashed potatoes are definitely our favorite. Our kids enjoyed their pasta, and my husband really liked his Philly cheesesteak. We haven’t tried the pizzas yet, but plan to next time.
The service is friendly, though we’d love to see it feel a touch more polished to match the elegance of the space. They have a cute patio that isn’t open yet — we’re really looking forward to that eventually opening because it will add even more charm.
Overall, it’s a beautiful spot with great potential, and we’ll definitely keep coming back to see how it grows!
I think Carriage House is something Arcata desperately needs, something New American and upscale with small plates, creative mains and quality drinks.
Unfortunately, Carriage House fails across the board. We tried in December of 2024 during our yearly holiday visit and had a better experience then, the food quality declined severely over the course of a year.
Service was lackadaisical, required prompting and was unimpressive given the size of the bill. Normally, when I order a main for $38 I expect commensurate service. Even if the food isn’t perfect, I can often forgive a bit more if staff is attentive and energetic but I can’t award any points for service.
My girlfriend had the house white wine and I had a Corpse Reviver #2 (a favorite of mine which I was excited to see on the menu); we weren’t particularly impressed by the wine but it was fine enough for a house wine. My cocktail was probably the worst Corpse Reviver I’ve had, I overheard the staff confirming the drink was equal parts which it is with the exception of the absinthe which should be a rinse.
We ordered the wedge salad with miso dressing which was enjoyable, then the vodka pasta and the braised short rib which were not.
The pasta came out seemingly torn into 2-3 inch sections, there was not a full noodle on the plate. The sauce was spicy in a way that was not “more-ish”, well spiced dishes have a quality that encourages you to continue eating while this did the complete opposite. We left the plate borderline untouched.
The short rib came out cold, not even bordering on lukewarm. They brought out a second plate which was better, but felt like something we could make at home. The plate was short rib and mashed potato with a basic XO sauce that was deeply uninteresting. No veg, nothing novel.
Nothing was fun or interesting with the exception of our salad, but we’d heard the same Sinatra song for the third time when our mains came out so perhaps we were just starting to lose it.
I want to like this place and I want them to improve but I cannot, in good faith, recommend you spend your money here. Our check came to about $110, I don’t know if I would have been satisfied unless that check was closer to $40 given the quality of the food. That is not reasonable given the upscale nature of the establishment, but the vision is not connecting to the current execution.
Abysmal.
Edit: mistakenly gave 2 stars, huge error on my part
Happy hour menu items were not available, the dinner menu was lackluster, the atmosphere ho-hum, and the sophomoric bartenders were confused about how to make basic cocktails.
We also heard that the chef left when management changed hands…so…we fled next door and had an absolutely fantastic (yet spendy; if you go for appetizers + full bottles of wine = around $400 for three people) meal.
Flash forward to a couple days ago, and it was unrecognizable. Felt like I was eating in a crab shack, but with no crabs, and extra “shack”.
Braised short rib came out cold, spicy vodka pasta came out like the noodles had been cut for a 3yr old, and the server behaved like it was his first day out of Human Class. Haunted by the ratatouille song they played on a loop for 40 minutes.
