The Grand Sport and Carhop’s Special are how a sub should be done. Great size!
The melted cheese is an excellent touch.
Cash Only and worth every penny.
Luckily, Carhop’s exists. Today I stopped in for lunch for the first time with my family and finally, I have found a restaurant outside Philadelphia that understands how to construct the cheesesteak with honor and dignity. I ordered their Z-28, which is steak, american cheese (no one in their right mind puts cheez-wiz on a steak and if someone says that’s how they do it in Philly they are lying), fried onions, and garlic. I’ll be honest, I was skeptical of the garlic- this is a non-standard cheesesteak addition BUT after eating this sandwich I am wondering why this isn’t a Philly staple??
To say this cheesesteak was phenomenal is an understatement. Everything about it, including the garlic, was perfect. The meat was exactly how it should be, greasy (in a good way!), chopped up fine, with plenty of fried onions and deliciously melty american cheese. The bread, which is where 99% of places outside of Philly go wrong, was incredible. The perfect amount of density and chew that is required in a cheesesteak. So many Pittsburgh shops go wrong by using what I like to call, “angel bread”- bread that is so soft it has no structural integrity and falls apart under the slightest pressure. I don’t know where Carhop’s gets their bread but I’m glad they know that a good sandwich (especially a cheesesteak) starts with good bread.
My boyfriend got the Super Sport, which I had a bite of and it was also great (the pepper relish is AMAZING do not skip it!!!). I’ll probably come back with another review of their other sandwiches, that is, if I ever manage to order something besides the cheesesteak.
Thank you Carhop’s for making Philly feel a little less far away today. I’ll be back, often.
This place is old skoool kool a lot of nostalgia from growing up going to car shows and the drag strip with my dad. They take your order when you walk in, I got a foot long cheese steak with American and fried onions, they have a ton of options and toppings. The steak was good quality, I think it’s sirloin and not ribeye but that’s ok, the onions were cooked great and still had some crunch to them too. The bread was soft but also had chew to it, really solid for a local offering.
This is what I expect old school cheesesteaks were like 40+ years ago, it seems timeless and really good quality. The staff were awesome and friendly. Note that it’s cash only but for a 12” with a bottle of water it was only $12 so it’s reasonably priced. Does it push aside common oven? No, but it’s still really good and I like it a little better than uncle Sam’s IMO.
No need to complain about the price either. Yeah it might say $23 for full size hoagie , but it’s 2 foot long and could easily feed 2-3 or one of me haha…. Trust me, if you haven’t been here? GO RIGHT NOW! (Well not till 11am and they are closed some weekdays) … I will be heading there today for my 5th visit. My favorite part is the feeling you have when you leave, pure happiness (and stuffed!) lol
