At our Huntsville, AL location, we are part of a historic seafood tradition. Captain D’s Seafood Restaurant first opened its doors back on August 15, 1969. A lot has changed since then, but our commitment to serving freshly prepared seafood at a great value has been our core mission from the beginning. Known originally as Mr. D’s Seafood and Hamburgers, Captain D’s was opened in Donelson, Tennessee. From the very start, we set out to provide quality seafood at reasonable prices, a concept that was revolutionary at the time.

From the moment I walked in, the experience went downhill. The line inside was barely moving, and what should’ve been a quick stop turned into almost a 30-minute wait just to place an order. I watched multiple people get frustrated and leave because the wait was ridiculous for the amount of customers inside.
When I finally reached the counter, the service was just okay — not rude, but definitely not welcoming. It felt like everyone working was stressed or just going through the motions.
And then… they got my order wrong.
I ordered the Supreme Sampler, and they completely forgot the chicken. That’s literally one of the main items in the box. If this is happening inside, I can only imagine how many mistakes happen in the drive-thru.
As for the food:
Most of it tasted fine, but the hush puppies and shrimp were over fried and slightly burnt, almost like they were cooked in old oil. It really took away from what could’ve been a decent meal.
If you plan on visiting, prepare to wait and double check your entire order before leaving.
We decided to place a to-go order, thinking it would be a convenient and familiar option. While we waited for the food, I went inside to use the restroom, and that’s when I realized something had gone seriously downhill. The restaurant’s cleanliness was appalling. Trash bins were overflowing, and the floors and counters looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in some time. Every corner seemed neglected, with visible dirt and clutter. It was a sad sight for a place that once had a dependable reputation, and it set an uncomfortable tone for the meal.
Despite the unpleasant surroundings, we were hoping the food itself would make up for it. When we received our order, the food was hot, but somehow it still tasted stale and off. Both of us regretted our decision almost immediately after eating—it left our stomachs unsettled, making us wish we’d chosen any other option. For my meal, I ordered the fried fish and chicken combo with sides of macaroni and cheese and fries. Unfortunately, every single item was disappointing. The fish and chicken lacked flavor and freshness, the macaroni and cheese was bland and mushy, and even the fries felt like an afterthought. The most impressive part of the meal was the packaging, and that’s saying something.
Captain D’s used to be a reliable go-to for fast, tasty fried fish, but at this point, it’s hard to recognize what it once was. I wouldn’t consider returning unless they underwent a complete 180 in terms of both restaurant cleanliness and food quality. Their standards have dropped significantly, and it’s clear that either management has changed or the chain as a whole has chosen to cut corners. For now, I absolutely would not recommend this location—or even Captain D’s in general—to anyone looking for a decent meal. Until they make serious changes, this is not the place to satisfy a craving for fried fish or seafood.
The manager is amazing!! I somehow accidentally threw my phone away I didn’t realize it until I was down the road 20 mins! Came back looked for it inside then him & I went to the dumpster sure enough there it was in a bag of trash! The manager got it out we went inside he washed and sanitized it for me! He is amazing and went above and beyond for me! I will never forget him! Thank you!
Update: I went to the official website to voice my complaint and your overall experience has stars that you rate. Well, the stars on all of the questions work, except for the overall experience thus, the website won’t let you enter the complaint…a complete waste of time, effort, and money all the way around.
Update 2/4/2022 I went back at an earlier time of day. It was 4PM. There was a wait, but it was worth it. Food was hot. Looked amazing! Some of its already gone in the picture. The shrimp was a little small, but everything tasted great!
