At our Hopewell, VA location, we are part of a historic seafood tradition. Captain D’s Seafood Restaurant first opened its doors back on August 15, 1969. A lot has changed since then, but our commitment to serving freshly prepared seafood at a great value has been our core mission from the beginning. Known originally as Mr. D’s Seafood and Hamburgers, Captain D’s was opened in Donelson, Tennessee. From the very start, we set out to provide quality seafood at reasonable prices, a concept that was revolutionary at the time.

I almost walked out at that point, but I went ahead and ordered because it was getting late and I needed to get home. I specifically asked her was everything going to be cooked fresh because of the fact they had no customers. She said it would be fresh. My order was simple, a 10-piece fish family with french fries and coleslaw, a 20-piece shrimp meal with green beans and a baked potato with a side of grilled shrimp. Right after she took my order, she went right back over to that corner, sat down, and started watching her tablet again, instead of preparing the bags with sauces and things I may need. Shortly after, I see an older man in the kitchen area I’m going to make a guess and say he was a cook although he could have been the manager as well. I watched intently…. I go to Captain D’s all the time I’ve watched the cooks through the window didn’t see the same thing that I normally see… at that time another customer came through the drive-thru and I heard the young lady taking the order.
The food started to come up… it was rather quick.
However, she was not so I waited to see if the young lady was going to start packaging it up. However, she was in no hurry to do that either. She finally brought the tray from the window over to the counter, and then put it back and then said, “Oh it’s not completely ready yet, I’m sorry.” At that time, I made sure she knew I was taking the food to go and she responded that she had to show me the food first before she bagged it up; for that I appreciated it.
Then all the food came up. At that moment, she got the food from the window again, began to show it to me. She opened it up I saw the fish but it didn’t look like it had just been taken up, it wasn’t that hot, I should have felt heat radiating. I even stuck my finger corner of the fish, it was warm but not hot, I thought maybe it was the first tray he had put up there, and I asked her again, are you sure this is fresh, and she assured me that it was. I questioned it because of how quick it came out. She then asked me if I needed sauces, and I told her everything, tartar sauce, malt vinegar, cocktail sauce etc… I then asked for extra butter, and sour cream for the baked potato. At which time, she informed me they didn’t have any butter. I replied, “It says butter and sour cream on the receipt…
By the time I got it home it was warm, but the fish fillets were greasy, tough and heavy, not light and crispy. I’m wondering if they precooked some fillets and then dropped them in a grease again to finish them off… which if you do that makes the fish extra greasy and tough.
All I can say, for sure about the food being fresh was the grilled shrimp because I watched him take those out of the fridge and put them through the broiler oven. I eat at the Captain D’s all the time in Chesterfield, and Richmond… never has it tasted or had the consistency that this had. My wife ordered the shrimp, she said they tasted old. She said the best thing about her meal was the baked potato… This location has only been there for a few years, I’ve been there a few times and it’s been hit or miss. I’ve eaten inside the dining room and had to send food back because it was not the way it should be. It’s sad too because it’s the only Captain D’s in this area can the restaurant itself is very clean, of course it kind of makes sense if nobody ever goes in there to eat. The closest one to me is Petersburg… the restaurant’s not as clean as this because it’s an older location, but they’re food is way better than this…never again. What does it take these days for people to care?
PRO-TIP: Food is hot so open the lids when you get it. And let it catch a little air, so it retains crispiness! Otherwise it will get soggy. Turn a seat heater on to keep some heat in on the drive home.
I had the 10pc Fish family meal, 4pc chicken meal, green beans, fries, hush puppies and jalapeno poppers & fried okra. Fish was crispy, chicken was as well, green beans have just enough taste to not need anything else on them, fries, hushpuppies and okra was fresh and lightly crispy as well! Jalapeño poppers were pretty good as well.
The drive thru speaker is kind of suspect, so speak clearly and be patient, but thats on ownership!
Other than that nothing bad to say, I love it there!
