I just tried the cantina for the first time tonight with a takeout order. I have to say it greatly exceeded all expectations, the food is great and the man who took my order was great and very nice. They will be seeing more of me and my family in the future

Cantina Ixtaccíhuatl
I was less than a mile down the road and left a less than authentic Mexican experience at Sonora Mexican Grille. The bad margarita was more than too much.
Upon arriving I was met by an eclectic ambiance.
There is a retail space at the entrance. Clothes hang on a rack and a Christmas tree is in the corner that mists be 18 feet tall. It is bedeck in American flags and other red, white and blue ornaments.
I was greeted by a young g man who felt like he was in his teens.
Two small children sat at the bar, they climbed down to play after I was instructed to seat myself. They played on a scooter type toy.
A pool table was the altar for a lone watermelon in another corner behind the wooden enclosure that felt like a living space. Not sure what it was, but a curtain covered the entrance to the enclosure.
Ceiling fans whirling are moving air, but it is slightly warm – not uncomfortable, just noticeable.
I informed Gilberto that I wanted an authentic margarita and we settled on a corona because the margarita is made with a mix.
I wait for my food as I begin this review.
The paper menu is still in development.
This feels like an all-in-one restaurant. If ambiance is the goal, this is not your spot.
I let Gilberto know that I am not in a hurry and I prefer well done fish.
The fish is well done and seasoned. It was smaller than expected, but well done like I asked. The black beans are good.
Everything was HOT! I had to wait a moment to let it cool.
Well, I have eaten and the food was good enough to co we the check of a man who walked through the door to order to-go for himself and his wife.
I sampled the margarita here as well.
It was good — not overwhelmingly margarita mix.
The restaurant feels like going to your grandma’s house and your little cousins are playing; abuela has all this stuff hanging out and family is everywhere. The little boy and girl playing make this feel like family for me.
If you want a commercial dining experience, this is not the spot. If you want a family dining experience—home grown style, this is it.
The food is good.
Gilberto was attentive.
The margarita was good.
Should I find myself in/near Portsmouth again, this is my spot.

Difficult name, but great food! We heard about this great Mexican restaurant on the local radio station a few weeks back and it’s become our favorite spot. But first things first: the name sounds like “Ecstasy Waddle”. You’ll need to know that when you go to tell your friends about this place.
Atmosphere: very open (even a dance floor) but also some private nooks and booths, but there’s also seating at the bar. The building still has its historic vibe and hasn’t been overdone with cliche Mexican decor. Also, since it’s new it’s not crowded or loud; no TVs blaring music or 20 different sports channels. You can actually carry on a conversation. While the building is older it is clean and everything but the front door seems ADA compliant. Parking is limited at the side of the building, but there is also on street parking. FWIW: after leaving here you don’t smell like you’ve been working a double shift in the kitchen. <-added bonus.
Food: The menu is pretty simple but with the ability to substitute the options are pretty open. The food is well prepared, looks, smells, and tastes good. The portion size is appropriate. Where other similar location have you bringing half of your order in a box or feeling stuffed, the portion size here is filling if you’re hungry or splittable if you like sharing small plates. My favorite thing about the food here is they don’t try to hide it under large amounts of sauce or inexpensive toppings or that you’ve been fitted with a beans and rice feedbag. The chips and salsa that are served complimentary are excellent. The chips are crispy and not greasy and the salsa is a little hotter than other local comparable restaurants. If you order your entree as a meal you will also receive small bowls of beans/rice/cheese dip, pico, and excellent guacamole. The dessert, Sopapiso (so?) is amazing, and only $1.00. It taste a bit like Creme Brûlée on top of cheesecake. You’ll have to try it.
Service: Excellent, fast, and friendly. On each occasion our party was quickly seated and if the recommended location wasn’t acceptable we were allowed to change locations. Our drink orders were quickly taken and filled as requested. Refills were attended to without having to request, but not in that “I’m begging for a tip/ hover over your table” manner. Plenty of time was given to place our order. Wait staff were able to make accommodations for a party member with food allergies/ vegan. Food for entire party was brought out at the same time so no one had to wait to eat. Empty plates were cleared as necessary and checks brought upon request with payment made at the table. Overall, the service was seamless and professional. We were able to order our meal, socialize, pay and leave without the wait and frustration that sometimes occurs with less trained staff.
Overall impression: We love this place, and it was difficult to share it with others lest it become too popular and change. But a good business needs good customers to keep its doors open. So if your looking for someplace new, some place different, or some place better than where you have been going then this is it.

Almost every birthday, or special event we stop in for a meal.
The food is amazing, Hot, tasty and feels like it was made FOR you, not just sold TO you.
The tortas are one of my favorites, I’m also partial to the linga tacos, but I’ve not found a menu option here I don’t like!
Eating here feels like a meal at a family members house, Kids playing in the background, the smell of dinner cooking, and a relaxed, friendly hospitality that other restaurants sorely lack!
I’m always happy to introduce others to this place,and I’m already dreaming of what I’ll eat on my next trip.
