Calle 21 – SpotOn Order

The three of us were amazed at the quality, quantity and prices of the food. This is the first Mexican restaurant I’ve been to that didn’t offer chips and salsa, so I asked our server to bring us some. She asked if we wanted guacamole, which I don’t normally get because I am very picky, but she recommended it.
All I can say is if you visit Calle 21
MAKE SURE YOU GET THE GUACAMOLE. It was absolutely amazing and reminded me of the homemade version Grandma Olga used to make!
The service was incredible and the food we ordered came out quickly.
We will definitely be visiting Calle 21 again.
Plating is functional if uninspired. It’s the flavors that take center stage here, my Chile rellenos taco melted into my mouth with just the right heat. The quesabirria taco really stood out to me. Smash taco technique, the meat was sweet, savory and spicy with great crunch. Unfortunately the woodwork was poorly executed wich detracts from the experience.
Unfortunately, we recently had a very unpleasant experience with one specific waitress. She wears a beanie (she is not Mexican at all) and has tattoos on her face. She accused my wife of “throwing money at her,” which never happened, and later claimed that I was looking at her in an aggressive way (which I didn’t understand since I looked at the head chef, he looked at me and also smiled). The accusation made no sense, as we were simply sitting and interacting normally like any other customers, as normal people (there are cameras so it can speak for itself)
While we were being served by a different waiter, she interrupted and told us we should leave, saying she would call security and the owner. Neither security nor the owner ever came, even though we would have been more than willing to speak with them to clarify the situation. The waiter who was assisting us apologized and said he didn’t want to get in the middle of this conversation, which shows that even he recognized how uncomfortable and unnecessary the situation was.
We truly enjoy this restaurant, the atmosphere, and the Mexican culture it represents. That is why this experience was so disappointing and confusing. One staff member’s behavior should not reflect on the entire place, but it did affect our experience as loyal customers.
I hope management takes this feedback seriously and addresses the situation so that other customers do not go through something similar. We care about this restaurant and want to continue supporting it, but respectful and professional treatment from all staff members is essential.
…
overall I thought this place was excellent. good value for money. great service , our waiter guy (young chap wearing white air force ones) was super gracious, nice and polite and food was excellent for the price. The carnitas were superb. well recommended. Food was quick and good portion sizes. Guac was great and lots of chips, expected for $9 guac and chips to be fair. The environment is casual and they have quite a few drinks / beer food specials.
They have typical beers including NA and a margarita menu. I cannot comment on the margaritas.
Seating outside is nice. Inside could be louder for those sensitive because it does seem like all tile.
The other great thing is there are lots of desserts options close by for that sweet tooth afters
I will return. thumbs up
Also the closing time is the bomb 10pm. keep that up, we need more of that in pdx.
It’s a fun environment with a patio out front and large central bar. Definitely loud inside. They also have a TV with sports playing.
I’d come back again when we’re down here.
We had the Birria Taco Plate and a taco plate with one carnitas taco and one al pastor taco, along with the chips and salsa. Be aware, they charge $6 for chips and salsa, but the chips are fresh and warmed and the salsa is spectacular. Of the tacos, the birria were tasty, the carnitas was served with some fresh guacamole on it and was pleasant, but the al pastor stole the show! Next time we’ll just get those with some rice and beans.
They have a well stocked bar that we did not take advantage of in the middle of the day. 🙂
