That said, we came here for the food—and it truly delivered.
My husband is Bengali and was craving authentic Bengali food, so we decided to try this place over the weekend, and we absolutely loved it. We started with the mutton (goat) cutlet and Mughlai paratha. The mutton cutlet was adequately stuffed, fried crispy to perfection, and tasted really good. The Mughlai paratha by itself was just okay, but when paired with the aloo tarkari (potato curry) it became an instant hit.
For the main course, we ordered chicken chow mein and Katla fish curry with white rice, and both dishes truly transported us straight to Kolkata. The flavors were incredibly authentic, homely, and comforting—exactly the kind of food you crave when you miss home.
I really wanted to try rasgulla, but I was so full that I had to skip it this time. Definitely going back to try more items from the menu—purely for the food. If you’re looking for authentic Kolkata flavors and can overlook the basic setup, this place is absolutely worth a visit. ✨
Loved the Gobi Manchurian, it was crispy and spicy on the outside and soft on the inside!
The noodles were thin and very tasty too and was a good combination with the Gobi.
The samosa chaat was very nice too with samosa being crispy and the sev on top was a very good addition as well!
Will visit again
The Indo-Chinese cuisine gets a fresh uplift at this place. The tangra chilli chicken with egg hakka noodles is an amazing combination full of rich flavors.
We also tried the Egg Devil, this was also crispy but the potato inside could use some masala. The pani puri had good taste and so did the chicken egg roll. I think I would have liked just egg roll without chicken.
Lastly the chicken biryani didn’t meet our expectations. Service is prompt but at times chaotic. Lovely place that brings Kolkata to Bay Area.
The Mughlai paratha, their bestseller, lived up to its reputation. It was perfectly cooked, with a delicious, hearty filling that made it a satisfying choice. The samosa chaat was equally delightful, featuring a blend of crisp samosas, tangy chutneys, and fresh toppings that created an explosion of flavors.
Overall, my experience at Calcutta Chaat House and Bakery was excellent. Each dish was well-prepared and flavorful, making it a place I highly recommend. I look forward to my next visit to try other items on their menu.
It was not very crowded at the time and we got ourselves settled on a table close to the counter. We were a group of 4 and ordered quite a few items to get a taste of the variety that they have to offer.
We started with 2 orders of Jhal Muri and an order of Dahu Phuhcka , Calcutta egg roll and masala tea. Perfect starters that are well balanced in taste and are made with a blend of mustard oil (for Jhal Muri especially) that lends to its amazing and authentic taste.
Probably the best Jhalmuri that we have had till date and that Mustard oil definitely made it taste great.
For the dinner part we ordered kadhai paneer , goat curry and veg biryani with a few garlic naans. All items tasted good and well presented. Adding gold to glory was the Rassgulla that is an absolute recommendation if you happen to be around.
Fish Cutlet tasted great, in an order you will get 2 pieces of cutlet. And they are served with kasundi ie Bengali mustard sauce. This gives you a feeling of the Calcutta style Fish cutley
Egg Chicken Roll – The taste of the chicken in the roll was sad. It was nowhere close to the Calcutta style chicken(kabab) roll. But, if you have just the egg roll as it is ,then its very tasty and I loved just the egg roll part. I wouldn’t recommend the Egg Chicken Roll but definitely go for the Egg Roll.
Mishti Doi – Very disappointing. I had only once. I would recommend to change the name to just sweet yoghurt instead. It was nowhere close to the Bengal’s famous mishti doi flavor – the texture, the taste, the color. I do not recommend this to anybody. But I’ll surely go for it once the taste improves.
Mutton Biryani – I had heard mixed reviews about the Biryani from my friends. The time I had it, I wasn’t too impressed to be honest. I was looking to have a Calcutta style Biryani but it was not up to the mark, to my opinion. The flavors were not as smooth as a usual Calcutta Biryani although you will get a faint taste of it. I felt my Biryani had more masala than a usual Calcutta Biryani. And of course it did come with the potato or aloo.
Chat – I once had the chat and it tasted good.
Having said this, I will surely come back here for more hoping to taste some more items from the menu.
What an amazing discovery, I am from Calcutta, so I am obviously a bit biased, but all things aside, the food is great here, quite authentic and highly recommended.
