I’m from New Orleans so I had to give this a shot while visiting Helena.
Gumbo was awesome. Not as good as some places in NOLA, but this is Helena and we’re grading on a curve. You won’t be disappointed.
Shrimp and grits was fine, but I would suggest trying something else on the menu.
Decor was on point and helped me feel at home. Staff was amazing. Food was fresh and hot. Very reasonably priced.

Review – Cafe Zydeco – 3/19/25 – We visited this restaurant with an unusual name after having checked out its menu online. We basically opened this restaurant, stopping in just two minutes after they opened. Decorated in a very eclectic homey decor with mix and match furniture, there was no shortage of interesting things to explore with our eyes. It was a mixture of New Orleans, patriotic, and humorous wall decor. Speaking of patriotism they offer free soft drinks or coffee for Veterans and first responders. The staff was friendly and helpful and the service was very fast. One thing I greatly appreciated was the fact that the background music was in the background, meaning that it was easy to carry on a conversation while we enjoyed our meal.
At the counter I ordered the BBQ Po-Boy with pulled pork as my meat choice. I greatly enjoyed the delicious blend of mildly hot spices with yummy coleslaw on top. Prices are very reasonable given the obvious quality of the food. Our only complaint was that we were both still hungry afterwards. Next time, (and there will be a next time) I’ll simply order a side to go with my sandwich. – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

delicious food, friendly service and the atmosphere is cozy and festive (for mardi gras!) red beans and rice were delicious and the hush puppies were the best i’ve ever had (and my family lives in north carolina) on top of that, the beignets were fresh, soft, and tasty.

Two meals and a side of fries for $40. It was so bad that after a few bites we left. Crawfish was chewy, the shrimp tasted old, the broth tasted like unseasoned fish water. Oh and the fries were worse than any frozen fries I’ve had at the store.
They should worry less about their politics and more on cooking edible food.

Very disappointed with our experience tonight. I haven’t been to Cafe Zydeco since they moved locations a few years ago and was so excited to try it again. The food was incredibly bad, watery, tasted old and rubbery. Not a single bit was fresh. I only even had a few bites of the meal before I was unable to eat anymore and left it on the table. No wonder they make you pay before you get your food or I would have sent it back. Within an hour after eating, both my boyfriend and I were having stomach issues from food poisoning. Would not recommend to anyone in Helena again.

As a former resident of New Orleans I was pleasantly surprised to find an excellent Cajun restaurant in Helena. Some of the best Cajun food I’ve found outside of Louisiana. Very reasonably priced. I ate here three times during my 4 day stay in Helena. Staff were very friendly.

Excellent food and caring service! I had a big bowl of the Chicken & Andouille Sausage Gumbo, it was so flavourful, spicy and delicious! We had Beignets & coffee for dessert.

Lovely lady who worked there. They also sell the famous orange tin cans of the hickory coffee directly from NOLA!

Was so glad we stopped by. Eat inside, there’s a cute “cove” where the decor is inspired by the French quarter. Reasonable prices.

What a cute place! The meals are huge and fabulous. We had Jambalaya as well as Pasta Zydeco and wish we weren’t just passing through town as we would eat here regularly and will remember it next time through.

Born and raised in New Orleans, living in Montana for the last 18 years, we are highly skeptical and judgmental of any restaurant in Montana that claims to serve Cajun food. Until we found Cafe Zydeco, we thought they didn’t exist. Cafe Zydeco’s gumbo, hush puppies, and beignets passed with flying colors for authentic Cajun flavor. I will say that fish doesn’t belong in seafood gumbo, but it didn’t disappoint. The shrimp was plentiful and the roux delicious. The hush puppies were the best, rivaling any that we’ve ever eaten. Overall, our party of 4 ordered the gumbo, crayfish Etouffee, shrimp po-boys, and hush puppies. Cafe Zydeco served up genuine Cajun food with friendly service at a good price. If you want some good Louisiana cooking that you don’t have to prepare yourself, give CZ a try. (Now, if only they could get “real” french bread. :))
