Amazing food and people. Come and try for yourself. Favorites are Duck Confit (with that crispy skin), Sardine on toast, Bourguignon and can’t go wrong with any dessert.
Please don’t let my poor description get in the way of you trying this place. I rarely write reviews so I didn’t pay a lot of attention to the menu.
This is an intimate restaurant but not stuffy in the least. We were greeted quickly, our food came out fast and hot. Dessert was delicious!
I flew to Paris last year strictly to eat great food. Eating at Cafe Iula had me feeling like I was in a Paris cafe…but a lot closer to home!
We will most definitely be back.
My employee has supported this restaurant for a long time and spoke very highly of it, so on November 5th, we came in for dinner with open minds and full respect. From the moment we walked in, the entire room stared at us. We were the only women of color there, and the vibe shifted immediately — but we brushed it off because we try to stay humble and not assume the worst.
We waited a long time to be helped, and because it was loud, my employee called out a little louder so the owner could hear her. She wasn’t rude or yelling; she just needed to be heard over the noise. The owner turned toward us with a dismissive look and said, “I’m talking right now, but I’ll get to you when I’m done.” We let it go and continued our evening.
At the end of the meal, when my employee went to order dessert, the owner confronted her and claimed she “yelled earlier.” My employee tried to apologize and explain, but the owner wouldn’t listen and walked away. She felt embarrassed for bringing me there and insisted on paying personally.
While she was paying, the owner approached me with an antagonizing tone asking, “So… how was everything?” When I calmly expressed that I didn’t appreciate how she treated my employee, she repeatedly insisted that my employee “yelled,” which simply wasn’t true. She kept poking and trying to justify herself as we were trying to leave peacefully.
Then the most uncomfortable part happened:
Her husband came out from the back and walked up to our table with an intimidating presence.
We were three seated women, calm and not causing a scene, so there was no reason for a grown man to approach us like that. Feeling unsafe, I asked, “Do I need to bring my husband too?” Immediately he tried to humiliate me, repeatedly cutting me off with, “How old are you? How old are you? How old are you?”
I finally asked him the same question back, and he responded, “Bring your husband then! What is this? Why do you want to bring your husband?” I told him, “Because I don’t understand why you’re standing over us trying to intimidate three women.”
The owner then claimed he had “no idea” what was going on, but I had clearly seen her go back and explain everything to him right after confronting my employee. At that point, both of them started repeatedly yelling, “Get out of my restaurant!” even though we were already leaving quietly and respectfully. It felt humiliating — like they wanted to make us feel small for simply defending ourselves.
We never raised our voices.
We never disrespected anyone.
We never caused a scene.
But we were stared at, dismissed, confronted, antagonized, intimidated, and finally yelled out of the restaurant. As the only women of color there, the treatment felt deeply uncomfortable and disappointing.
I’m writing this review so others can know what we experienced before choosing to dine here.
It appears to be a couple running the place. She is serving and he is cooking. What a team!
All of the food was delicious!
We started with the French onion soup- out of this world! Best I’ve ever had. I had the Bavette à l’échalotte (steak with roasted potatoes and a green salad). I ate every bite and enjoyed it is so thoroughly. My partner got the Beef Bourguignon with mashed potatoes. She was kind enough to let me have a bite and I am so lucky! The sauce was perfect and the potatoes, so creamy.
At the end, we were shocked by how reasonable the prices are! I genuinely expected theeal to be twice what it was.
I wish we lived in town to be able to go back more often!
