Amazing gluten free options! From real food like pasta to deserts like meringues and the cutest mini macarons. Service is excellent. Everything is freshly made so expect a brief wait but they have fresh roasted coffee and comfortable seating to wait.

My wife and I had great expectations for this place. We drove from afar as a way to celebrate Mother’s Day on a Saturday since it doesn’t open on Sundays—my wife only eats GF and DF because of digestion problems. In the end, we were a bit disappointed. The restaurant has a cafe setup with a small space for dining in and seating, which we understand that how it was idealized. The key points for a three-star review were:

• Menu: in the day of our visit, some items were not available and that lowered our expectations especially. The sweets were an exception with a lot of great choices.
• Service: there was only one person working that day, and unfortunately, that person had to do everything, from cooking to take orders in. And for some reason, he didn’t seem to be in a good mood, something also noticed by another customer.

Gluten free and vegan friendly items available.
Practices COVID-19 safety precautions. Nice folks. Enjoyed my experience and will return when back in the area…. Looking forward to the ravioli, as they were out on my last visit. Delicious and fresh!

Mostly a place for pickup, they do have a very small dining area to eat in. Though small, the menu is loaded with awesome mostly vegan dishes (try the avocado fries!!!). Their coffee is home brewed and exceptional, and all their prepared food such as burgers or veggie dogs are handmade for a truly unique experience. They have lots of great dessert options and take home goodies like biscotti and pasta as well.

The gentleman there was very kind and tried his best to work around allergies (nuts and tomatoes, and almost everything had those in it). He said he changes the menu regularly and posts it. Unfortunately the desired item (salmon) was on the menu, but it was all gone.

I ordered the avocado fries. I’ve attached a photo. It was $7.50 for one small avocado with…something on it?…and a dollop of sauce below it (which makes this picture look like there’s a lot more there than there really is). The sauce tasted like a weird spicy peanut butter, and the avocado wasn’t very good. It was kind of a shock with how little food there was. It was pretty expensive for essentially a hot sliced avocado.

It seems like the hot drinks would be better than the food available. If I ever go back, I’ll go for a hot chocolate.

As a person with celiac disease and also somewhat lactose intolerant, I’ve never had an easy time going out to eat. However, this place made me feel like a “normal” person again, able to order anything on the menu, and not have to ask multiple questions to ensure I won’t get sick. The bread was amazing, I haven’t had gf bread this good in years.
Amazing and highly recommended!!

Gluten-free deliciousness, from soup to nuts!

There is a dearth of dedicated gluten free restaurants with a full service menu (i.e., not just sweets). In fact, I don’t know of ANY others in Pittsburgh, and honestly, dedicated GF is the only fail-safe way to dine out with celiac. Cafe Chocolade is not only dedicated gluten-free, it is whole food, all made from scratch, and much of the menu is plant-based.

And you can get actual meals – and what a meal that is. From gourmet appetizers like the avocado fries (so perfect: avocado dipped in a from-scratch bread crumb mixture, sauteed, and served with a plant-based creme, made, of course, from scratch), the entrees feature hand-made pastas, house-made plant burgers, dairy-free cheeses (again, made in-house), and pierogie – and these are just the menu items I’ve tried! The menu changes weekly, so you can always get something a little different.

The chef is an experienced gourmet, truly excited about good food. And oh, the house-made bread pastries, chocolates, and cakes are remarkable. Light and fluffy cakes and breads that lack the heaviness of some gluten-free baked goods. Nothing missing here – except the gluten.

You can order a cake for a special occasion, as I did for my sister and brother-in-law’s 50th wedding anniversary lunch. It was gorgeous and delicious, filled with ganache, berries, and frosted with plant-based “buttercream”. My pic isn’t perfect, as the cake had been boxed to-go and we un-boxed it on the spot, but we couldn’t resist digging in right there, after our superb lunch.

And get a french-pressed coffee with your dessert while you’re there. Roasted in-house daily. Mmmm.

(Also offers hand-made GF pastas to go, for cooking at home. What more could you ask for?)

I can’t wait to go back again and again. Phenomenal cake… Better then I imagined. If you are flying into Pittsburgh or seeing someone off, waiting for someone then you should stop in if open. I will from now on.
