Now the only thing I tried there was this burger and I’m not sure if it was a regular menu item. It was a good sandwich and the burger itself was very good. There was a heaping pile of sauerkraut on it, along with other condiments. I really enjoyed it, my daughter seemed meh on it and my wife didn’t care for it as she doesn’t like sauerkraut.
We will have to go back to give a more fair and accurate review. Based on this sandwich, I enjoyed Calabar and would happily return.
On a side note, it seemed very kid friendly to me. There were several families with kids and there was a small kitchen kids play area upstairs.
We thought it might’ve been an off day, so we tried again. Similar results except a bit more disappointing.
Our order took over 40+ minutes. When we got our food, it was warm at best. The gravy on the poutine had already begun to solidified, and we got no cheese pull from the curds.
To avoid the over sauceyness we both ordered the classic burger to get a more accurate representation of the actual burger.
Unfortunately, it was worse… the classic was overpowered by the onions. (Maybe the onions were sliced too much which can sometimes cause them to release too much sulfur-bitter flavor). The burger was again over sauced with mayo and ketchup.
We both ordered ours “with pink” but didn’t get that. When I think of a good burger I think of a nice caramelized crust with a juicy pink interior. Instead we got an over-sauced medium well throughout lacking any crust or color on the patty itself.
Cabalar gets a lot of hype, but for the price we paid, and the quality we got, it was definitely a bummer to say the least. We would much prefer Fuddruckers (for much cheaper) over what we got from Cabalar.
The poutine was great besides the temperature. Milk shake was good too. I also enjoy the classic atmosphere and soda fountain with the classic soft drinks.
I ordered the classic burger but with a double patty. It was covered in melty cheese, fresh onion, ketchup, and came out cooked perfect. It was extremely juicy, extremely well seasoned and you can tell the beef was super high quality. This is one of the best burgers I’ve had in many years personally.
My wife got the Macdaddy and it was every bit of everything she hoped it would be. She even expressed it might well be the best thing she’s had all vacation to eat which is saying a lot.
The beef tallow fries were salty and crunchy and seasoned perfectly as well. 10/10 experience. Definitely recommend.
The only rough part is parking. The lot is a little small and street parking is not abundant. Be prepared either to wait or walk.
