I first heard about Buster’s from Larry Hatteberg on one of his Hstteberg’s People segments on KAKE TV more than 15 years ago. Last weekend I jumped in the Jeep and after taking in all the sights of the Gypsum Hills and all the backroads, I pulled into Busters.
The owner immediately made me feel like I was a local, showed me around the entire bar and had some great stories. I knew I made the right decision to stop as this is my kind of place. Historic, rugged and laid back. If you’re dainty and looking for cloth napkins and fine cutlery, this isn’t for you. This is bbq, paper towels as napkins and a plastic fork!!!
I had a smoked sausage and potatoes and was very good. While eating, the Blue Healer (who is really in charge of the place) came over and fell asleep by my feet. I took that as a compliment that she liked and trusted me. I am not the kind of guy that gets offended by a well behaved dog in a bar. To be quite honest, I would rather be around a good dog than most people any day of the week.
I want to thank the owner, and a few other patrons there at the time, for a great experience and a step back into time. The photographs hanging on the walls were amazing and depicts the history of Sun City and nearby places.
Buster’s was the perfect ending to a day trip of the rugged and absolutely beautiful scenery of the Gypsum Hills of Kansas.
I will return to Buster’s for more stories and hospitality, you can count on it.

If you are going to Busters expecting a 5-star restaurant, then don’t go. If you are wanting something different that you won’t find hardly anywhere else, this is it. Busters is an experience and you have to understand the location and the locals it caters to. (Ranch country)
We came on a whim because it looked like an interesting place that just happened to be on our travel path. I read the reviews prior and take most with a grain of salt. The moment we walked in the door we were greeted by a group of people at the bar all friendly and smiled. It’s not your typical restaurant. You get your drinks and sit at your table, if you want food just mention it. There wasn’t a menu in our case, just whatever they had in stock. It just added to the experience. As far as I was concerned, we were visitors to a very local bar.
The food was decent for what we were there for. Nothing fancy, just a burger and potato salad on a paper plate.
It is truly taking a step back in time, maybe even a step into a different way of living.

Sun City is a small town nestled in the Gypsum Hills. It is not quite a ‘ghost town’ but currently only has about 25 residents. The city has many well-preserved buildings from Kansas’s historical past. Buster’s Saloon stands out among these buildings, housed in a former hardware store dating back to the 1870s.
Our journey from Michigan to Sun City, Kansas, was initiated by a simple phone call to Harry, the amiable owner of Buster’s Saloon. We sought his permission to park our RV on E. Main Street during our 1033-mile trek. In his characteristic friendly manner, Harry assured us it wouldn’t be a problem and also inquired about our arrival time, setting the stage for a warm welcome.
Upon walking in, you realize Buster’s has an honest, rugged charm that can only be found in these historic small towns throughout the United States. When we arrived, Harry introduced himself from behind the bar and made small talk about our trip and what had led us to travel to Busters’s from Michigan. When writing this review on 6/2/2024, Buster’s had a large selection of bottled beers with Yuengling and Bud Light on tap. Buster’s Saloon also carries a large selection of liquor. I highly recommend a pickle shot if you make the trip and enjoy liquor. The taps were clean, and the Yuengling was perfectly served in a large chalice. The conversation was interesting, and the patrons were all great.
We stayed for lunch and dinner, making small talk with most of the patrons who stopped in periodically. The food and company was fantastic. I had a hamburger for lunch, and for dinner, I had the ribs. Everything was perfect and served with a side of potatoes. My girlfriend had brisket for lunch and a steak for dinner and was pleased with both options. The food portions were very large, and I shared some of my dinner with some friendly dogs who make Sun City their home.
After a long night’s rest, I stopped by Buster’s and thanked Harry for his hospitality. I informed Harry that I would leave a positive review for Buster’s. Before departing, I asked Harry if I should include in the review that RV parking is allowed on Main Street. Harry informed me that RVs and trucks patronizing Buster’s are always welcome overnight. This makes the trip to Buster’s and Sun City much more accessible, leaving no reason not to take in their hospitality.
Again, I can’t thank everyone enough we met in Sun City for their hospitality, kindness, and willingness to share a small glimpse into their lives and stories. Stay safe, and see you soon.

Buster’s is a remote iconic saloon in south central Kansas. Tap beer, good food and occasional entertainment are on the menu. I’ve been going to Buster’s for many years and even met Buster himself in the day. Love this place!

Busters is an absolute disgrace to the restaurant industry. Our family outing turned into a nightmare from the moment we stepped inside. The place was cloudy with cigarette smoke. To make matters worse, three dogs were wandering freely around the tables, sniffing at customers’ feet—a health code violation if I’ve ever seen one.
We sat down, only to be told there were no menus and the only options were brisket or ribs. No variety, no explanations, just take it or leave it. We ordered brisket for the table and ribs for my dad, hoping for a decent meal. What we got was an insult: two pitifully small paper plates of brisket for five people, with far more fat than actual meat. We were left dividing this meal among us, scraping for anything remotely worth eating.
The real slap in the face? The bill. They had the audacity to charge $16 per person, totaling $80 for 10-12 ounces of meat stretched across five people. This is highway robbery, plain and simple. The service was indifferent, the atmosphere was a smoky, and the food was an overpriced joke. Busters doesn’t deserve a single star—it deserves to be shut down. Save your money and your sanity; avoid this dump at all costs.
