I frequent Bum’s a couple of times each week when I am craving home cooked vegetables. Their collards, cabbage and boiled potatoes are awesome. I also enjoy their potato salad, especially when it is freshly made. I don’t get over to Ayden too often in the mornings when breakfast is served, but boy do I enjoy eating breakfast there among locals. The staff offer excellent customer service. Today when I was leaving I spotted some beautiful collards being grown right outside the front entrance.

They have really good whole hog and wood cooked pork barbecue. The fried chicken was moist and flavorful. Great sides, especially the collards and the potato salad. Slaw is good, but a bit wet. Corn sticks are solid, but the potato muffins stole the show. Super friendly staff and great atmosphere.

Bum’s used to be a great place to get good country cooking at a reasonable price but nit anymore. I made the mistake of ordering pastry without chicken last week and when rge girl told me a quart was $18 well I almost fell out of my car. That would’ve been bad enough but the pastry was not completely done and had no juice in the container at which made it not and dry, not good at all. That was a $20 bill just thrown away and to top it off I didn’t even get any hushpuppies in the bag with it. They’ve lost their mind.

I Went there yesterday for the first time. Food was really good. I got the fried chicken and barbecue plate with two sides I really enjoyed it. And really good customer service. I would definitely recommend this place to family and friends. Thank you for a wonderful experience!!

Fantastic home style country food and eastern NC style whole hog BBQ! Great local landmark you must visit. Family owned/operated by the Dennis Family and they treat you like family. Love this place!

Now, we have always loved Bums. The food is good. The fried chicken is delicious and so is the pork. Their sides are very southern- I’ve tried the corn and boiled potatoes- bland, but fine. Sometimes they have mac and cheese. They have collards and limas beans. Their banana pudding is very good…tasty and sweet. Just the right texture- soft, but not super soggy. Their sweet potato muffins are moist and have a good flavor. Their corn bread sticks are just dry.
Here was my issue- the last time I went, I got two breasts, two drumsticks, a medium sized container of pork BBQ. It came out to $36 dollars and change. I didn’t get a receipt, but was told that a chicken breast is $5.50 so it was $11 for 2. Okay so that leaves $25 for two drumsticks and a container of pork. By their own pricing system, let’s say the drumstick is 3 each that’s six total so I guess the pork was about $15ish.
I cannot justify the price. Is the chicken pasture raised and fried in tallow???? No, I’m sure it’s fried in crappy seed oil like the fast food restaurants and it’s probably perdue chicken. The price does not make sense for me. Still good food, but can’t justify buying here anymore.

BBQ pork very tasty but a lite dry, no sauce on table. Pork chop had good flavor. Went early on a saturday but a strange vibe. Not the most friendly place. The owner apparently was there and people seemed anxious.

Well this is a hard review to write but I was really disappointed in the BBQ at Bum’s in Ayden. The selection on the buffet looked great and the service was great as well. The BBQ pork was hand chopped which I loved but the taste was not there. Way too much smoke, almost like liquid smoke had been poured on the que. Even after I finished, I still taste the smoke flavor. The sauce was not my favorite either. The creamed corn, pork chops and corn sticks were good. I would give them 3 stars. With Skylight Inn right down the road I am afraid I won’t be coming back for the pork.

Its 12/ 26 we are going from Little Washington to Wilson for Jim Hunts funeral and attend to my parents graves at the First Presbyterian Church. I figured we would get some breakfast and saw on line about the legendary Bums wood smoked bbq in Ayden and that they served breakfast early. We pull up and to our dismay they were closed yet my wife sees a man walking up to the door and says (jokingly) “we came all the way from Maryland to have breakfast and buy some Q to go.” The man was the legacy owner Larry Dennis, were we sent away, NO! Yet this Christian gentleman invited us in for coffee and cheese biscuits and gave us a pint bottle of his E.NC Q splash and of course refusing any money.
What is mostly lost in America today is found here with Larry in this little crossroad town at Bums. People like Mr. Dennis restores ones faith that there is still decency and civility left in our country and that America is gonna be alright.
