Bulrushes – Breakfast & Lunch Cafe is a revelation for the senses. From the moment I walked in, the aroma of slow-smoked brisket and freshly baked bread enveloped me, instantly awakening my appetite. The cashier and waitress, with their engaging and professionally charismatic presence, set the stage for an extraordinary meal.
The Brisket Bomb arrived, its spices releasing a tantalizing fragrance that hinted at deep, smoky complexity. With each bite, the brisket’s peppery crust and subtle sweetness danced across my palate, while the tender meat practically melted at the touch of my tongue. The Lasagna Special was a visual feast—layers of golden cheese and vibrant sauce that promised comfort. The first forkful delivered a harmonious blend of herbs and rich tomato, the flavors lingering and evolving long after the bite.
The Brisket Smash Burger was a sensory masterpiece. The patty, crowned with smoked bacon crumbles, grilled onions, and American cheese, was a riot of textures and tastes. The smokiness of the bacon and brisket mingled with the sweetness of the onions and the creamy tang of melted cheese, creating a flavor symphony that resonated with every chew. The onion rings added a satisfying crunch, their golden crust shattering with each bite.
Every sense was engaged: the sight of beautifully plated dishes, the sound of a lively café, the touch of crisp onion rings and pillowy buns, the smell of expertly blended spices, and above all, the taste —a crescendo of savory, sweet, and smoky notes that lingered long after the meal ended. Bulrushes doesn’t just serve food; it orchestrates a full sensory experience that elevates breakfast and lunch to pure artistry.

Eight of us had a delicious brunch here today, and the food was fabulous! I ordered a GF carrot muffin to take home, and I’ve just finished 1/2 of it. It is the absolute best GF muffin/cake I have EVER HAD!!! Thank you & I wish I lived closer! I’d be there every day!

Finally was able to stop in and see what all the fuss was about! Took my mom because I knew she would like several of the menu items she can’t find at other places. We came in at 1pm an hour before closing. Right off the bat greeted by friendly staff and service overall was excellent. Mom had the gyro and ordered a stuffed ham sandwich to go (it was enough for two people!) I had the crab dog and let me tell you it was delicious with the sauce on it and a potato hot dog bun. Big steak fries were good too. Next time we will go early and try breakfast.

When I first tried this establishment I was blown away…and I gave a glowing five star review. Unfortunately, every time I’ve been back since it’s been a worse and worse experience and honestly, I doubt I’ll be going back anytime soon. I couldn’t in good conscious leave up my five star review and show photos of the delicious meal I experienced originally because it hasn’t happened since! The next visit we waited and waited for our meals and then received undercooked omelettes with basically raw ingredients inside! We were so hungry we did our best to eat it but it was also flavorless. So very disappointing from the first experience when I had enjoyed an item I have not seen on the menus since (shrimp & grits). Since it was so busy that day I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and consider it an off day. My daughter was visiting and I decided to take her because she loves to try new places and I hoped that I had just experienced an off day. This time we decided to go a bit earlier hoping it wouldn’t be quite so busy and we would receive better service & food. Again the menu wasn’t that impressive there wasn’t as many selections as the first time we visited. So once again we decided to try omelettes. There were only two other table with people and they still managed to get my daughters order wrong. 🙁 The food was tasteless and the service, well let’s just say we ended up being there for quite awhile talking since she was visiting from out of town and in that time no one came by to check how our meal was (so we didn’t have the opportunity to let them know the order was incorrect) and no one ever refilled our waters or coffee. We ended up not eating our entire meal because honestly it just wasn’t that good and we figured we could doctor up the leftovers at home and reheat. However, with no one ever checking on us again I finally decided to go to up and request boxes to go. Let me also say, they were no short staffed….there were three employees in a huddle with their backs to the customers just talking. So incredibly disappointing!! I had high hopes for this establishment after the terrific first impression but if this continues I don’t see how they will last. We definitely won’t be going back anytime soon. So it’s back to Dream Weaver and I guess IHOP?? for breakfast in Prince Frederick.

The Eggs Benedict, omelets and coffee here are terrific. Eggs poached perfectly, meat VA ham, delicate holandaise with just enough tang; light thin omelet with lots of filling, and good strong coffee. Stopped in after an early morning photo shoot. Great service, great food. Thank you!

Great little business with friendly, competent staff. The way it works is you grab a menu, seat yourself, then when you’re ready you order and pay at the bar. They’ll give you a number and bring your food to your table. We went on a Saturday morning (party of two) and it was pretty busy, but we still managed to find a table. They offer a gluten free bread option and a make your own omelette. The coffee seemed a little pricey at first ($5/cup), but when I asked a waitress about it she told me they get it locally from Chesapeake Bay Coffee company in Silver Spring, MD. So the big takeaway is everything about this place is supportive of local businesses. Their coffee mugs are local schools and businesses. They sell local coffee. They have local business cards when you walk through the front door. It’s a great little vibe in here. Highly recommend.

A FORK SHORT OF CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Edit: I personally wanted to update this review. As Mr. Bonner the owner did reach out to me to apologize on behalf of what occurred with the waitress. I do appreciate that.
The café was busy this morning, the kind of busy that comes with Christmas—tables full, voices overlapping, plates moving quickly from kitchen to counter. It was warm inside, full of chatter and the smell of breakfast, the sort of place where small things are usually forgiven without a second thought.
Three of us sat down, ready to eat, when the silverware arrived—two sets instead of three. It was an easy mistake, especially on a morning like this. I asked another waitress politely if she could bring one more set when she had a chance. She nodded and moved on, clearly juggling more than a few tables.
An older gentleman soon brought our food and kindly asked if we needed anything else. I smiled and told him it was okay—I had already asked. Truly, it wasn’t a big deal.
But as time passed and the food cooled, the silverware never came.
So I stood up and asked again—calmly, kindly. Just a simple request. That was when the Christmas spirit seemed to slip.
The strawberry blonde, sharp-tongued and quick to mock, responded with comments that were unnecessary and unkind. What should have been a small courtesy turned into something oddly personal, her words louder than the clatter of dishes around us.
Later, when I asked for a box and quietly said I hadn’t meant to offend her, she bristled, insisting she didn’t like being blamed. I explained—gently—that I hadn’t blamed her at all. It had never been about fault. It was just silverware.
But sometimes, people hear accusation where none was spoken.
So I leave her with my final words, not in anger, but in dry holiday honesty for all to see on this public forum un-named:
“Next time I’ll just eat with my hands, Scrooge.”
That is the end of it.
To the other waitress—the one who had simply forgotten in the rush—there are no hard feelings at all. It really wasn’t a big deal. No worries. Busy mornings happen.
And to her, I sincerely say:
Merry Christmas.
Because the season isn’t about forks or blame—it’s about choosing kindness, especially when it would be easier not to.

A little different set up than most restaurants. When you walk in you grab a menu and seat yourself. Then once you’ve decided what to order you go up to the counter to do so. Very friendly workers. I ordered the Eggs Benedict chicken and waffles and it was delicious! The chicken was tender and flavorful, the waffle was fluffy and sweet, the poached eggs were a oddly great addition. I would definitely come back here just for that.

I visited this place for takeout a week or so ago and didn’t enjoy it as much as a I thought I would, but then the owner reached out to me and wanted to make it right which I really appreciate. I can finally say, now that I’ve been in the place that it is absolutely beautiful on the inside! Everyone working here is super friendly which is great aswell, overall environment was a 10/10 for me. I tried the burger with bacon and egg and it was one of the best burgers and fries I’ve ever had! like I said, I really appreciate the owner for making it right, I will definitely be coming back in the future. If you’re looking for a good place to eat for breakfast and lunch this is exactly what you’re looking for! 🙂
