I had one of the best meals I can remember at Budonoki over the weekend. For context, I’ve worked in hospitality and at Japanese restaurants, so my expectations for Budonoki were pretty high going in. But EVERYTHING blew me away- each individual dish I had was overwhelmingly good and made me wish I had more food to eat and more money to spend.

The service was totally impeccable. Hayden and Brandon deserve special shout-outs for answering all my annoying questions, offering great menu advice, letting me see the labels on bottles from the back room, and overall doing everything they could to make me feel welcome. The restaurant was excellent and it was clear to me the team behind it all had great chemistry. Next time I’m in town, I’ll be straight back here.

Delicious!! The menu is small but mighty and lots of great bites. I enjoyed every dish we ordered but my personal favorites were the sweet potato, Chef’s salad, and curry pan. Oh my I could have eaten four of them, they were so good. Plus coupled with the aji sauce, it was perfection!

The food was amazing. The sweet potato was something I never had in my whole life. I have been to 39 countries for work and have eaten so many foods and I have never tasted anything close to it. The aburi salmon was delicious as well. However the star of the show: Our server Nic. He was one of the best most down to earth servers I have ever had in my life. He was patient, recommended the best things on the menu including the sweet potato. And my glass of water was never empty. You would think going to a trendy restaurant that maybe there would be a stuck-up atmosphere. But no all the servers and waiters were extremely friendly. Although the sweet potato is not something I had before in my life, I think Nic was one of the best servers. I got. Although pricey it was worth any penny. We’ll be back in a week.

Great service and great food. Though their yakisoba is very salty. My favorites were scallop, salmon roll, and Japanese sweet potatoes. Waited about 30 minutes to get seated on a Monday night. One thing to look out for is their 4% surcharge for their service fee which is separate from tips.

It was really good portions menu small but mighty —yes, they have to figure out how to keep dishes hot longer, like the yakisoba noodles.
Great drinks, but why do people want to steal that mug. Ok people.

Great food, great service and great atmosphere. The food is small bites and great to share. We ordered 7 dishes for the two of us….it was too much food. 5 dishes would have been perfect. The service was really great…friendly and attentive. We also loved the music and overall atmosphere. Looking forward to going back with some friends.

I still drool thinking about this meal. We ordered 8 dishes and all were delicious! My favorite was the miso butter sweet potato but forgot to take a pic of it. Soft serve machine wasn’t working so we sadly couldn’t try it.

Excellent! Totally lives up to the hype. Every dish we had was delicious but the salmon sushi, sweet potatoes and salmon collar were the standouts for me. Only thing I think they could work on is the space— tables set between breaks in the booth, air conditioning that turns the food cold quickly, blindingly bright neon lights. It could just be a bit more comfortable. Still, highly recommend!

Tucked into the Virgil neighborhood in LA..One publication called it one of the 14 best new restaurants in America in 2024; another called it one of the restaurants that defined American dining in 2024.. Japanese fusion in an electric, fun-inducing atmosphere it definitely lived up to hype!!
I will say the only negative was the “single treatment”; I get LA restaurants kind of frown on single dining yet to me it shouldn’t matter. The reservation system only allows for 2 people; I arrived told her I was just one she got very pushy wanting me to sit at the bar. I don’t want to sit at the bar; I’d like a regular table just like everyone else. She then asks me to step aside and seats everyone else in line then comes back to me literally sits me in front of the door. I just didn’t feel very welcome maybe it’s a local thing I don’t know.
For the food; it definitely lived up to the hype. I got the pork Coppa (perfectly cooked pork; on its own the fish sauce is little overwhelming yet with the hot mustard and cucumbers it’s a perfect bite). I ordered the negima skewers (chicken)-again excellent the sauce on the bottom-yum.
I ended my dinner with the strawberry milk soft serve complete with a shovel how fun!! Some great soft serve!!
Overall I’d highly recommend this spot; fun atmosphere, great tasting unique food you can’t go wrong.
You could say “stick a shovel” in me I am so full and happy

My husband and I came here on a Sunday night and it was packed. We were told that the plates were small and the waitress recommended ordering 5-6 plates to share. We ordered 6, but to our surprise, the serving sizes were actually pretty big.

We ordered the Chefs salad, which was personally my favorite. Very flavorful dressing and a big pile of pecorino cheese, which I love. We also had the yellowtail sashimi, spicy tuna hand roll (comes with 4 seaweed squares for you to make your own) chicken wings (perfect crunch and sweetness), salmon aburri and the yakisoba (which we only had a bite of and took the rest to go because we were already full by the 3rd course.)

But no complaints here. The food was fantastic, we just know not to order so much next time, or to come here completely famished. The decor was cool and modern, music was really loud… it was difficult to have a conversation without having to repeat ourselves, but the ambiance was still cozy. Waitress was attentive and friendly, although I wish she would have cleared the food crumbs in between courses because our table got pretty messy.

All in all, we really enjoyed eating here, and it is definitely a nice addition to the neighborhood. We live about 7 minutes away, so we will definitely be back.
