Our first choice was packed so we decide to eat at Bruno’s. We had eaten there before. We arrived at 11:45, right before lunch. Instead of being packed, the restaurant was empty. We were the only customers.
We were greeted and seated immediately by the person who turned out to be our server. She brought us coffee and water, but had trouble taking our order because each item had to be selected in order based on the unit she was carrying. So, we went through our breakfast selections more than once.
Ray ordered the strawberry and whipped cream topped waffle breakfast. It came with eggs, which he chose scrambled, sausage and bacon. I chose the 8 oz. steak, scrambled eggs, country potatoes and sourdough toast.
When Ray’s order arrived, his waffle had turned into pancakes. Our server took back the pancakes as well as the rest of his breakfast, even though they were on separate plates. When the waffles were ready she returned with our orders. Needless to say the rest of his breakfast was cold and so was all of mine. The sourdough bread was artisan and was probably the best part of my breakfast.
I had ordered my steak medium rare. It was cooked medium. After our food was served, our waitress disappeared so I had to wait for her to make an appearance so I could request a steak knife. There was no offer of steak sauce, when she came back with the knife. She disappeared again. I was not going to wait for her to reappear.
The steak had good flavor despite being overcooked. The eggs, potatoes and toast were cold, but I ate them anyway. Once again, after the steak knife was delivered, our server disappeared and never checked back to ask about our meals or if we needed anything.
When she reappeared to take an order from the only other customers in the restaurant, we had to stop her as she was going past us. Before we could request coffee she asked if we wanted our bill. I said no, requested more coffee and a box for the rest of my breakfast.
Once finished, I boxed up my food and went to the restroom while my husband paid the bill. I reached down to pick up what I thought was our receipt only to learn she had only brought over her ticket for payment.
Once again, I had to wait for her to come out from the back so I could request my receipt only to be asked why. She had to request help, which was fine. What was not fine was her telling one of the other staff that I wanted a receipt, and didn’t understand why. I chose not to answer, thanked her when I was handed my receipt, and we left.
Bruno’s used to be a very good restaurant and typically packed whenever we went to Eatonville for a meal. There was almost always a wait which says a lot, compared to today. While the food wasn’t horrible, I would have to think hard about returning, especially now that a few new places have opened. As we were leaving, a few more diners arrived. Considering it was 12:30, I would have expected a lunch rush. There was none.
If you are traveling with your dog and want a meal where your dog can be with you, there is a dog friendly eating area. The restaurant is clean so I have no issue with it. The rest of our dining experience was seriously underwhelming.
I love that they have new ownership and the owner Patty shares her inspirational story on the menu.
The food was absolutely delicious. I loved the clam chowder and to be honest that was “The Best in the Pacific Northwest!” I have been going to different restaurants in this area since 2016 and that soup beats Dukes!
My only complaint was that the waiter brought all of our food at the same time and it made it hard to eat and enjoy each dish in a timely manner.
Lastly, everything was priced at decent price and I loved that it was affordable.
Service was a bit slow, but since it was our first visit, we didn’t mind much. We’ll definitely be coming back. The only downsides were that the chicken meals had bits of paper, the water and ice had a strange chlorine taste, and the kids menu wasn’t very kid-friendly — too much pepper and slightly spicy
Food was really good and even though the place is super busy on both times, our waitress did a great job taking care of us and also setting expectation on the food – as in when it might arrive – that is why the 5 star still for the service because I think they did what they can and to the best that they can.
We will definitely return on our next trip to mount rainier.
(Update) Returned for a brunch opportunity and it wasn’t great. Dirty tables and floors inside, bugs flying about, and our server took care of tables that were seated long after us prior to us. Food came out eventually with ingredients not listed on the menu. Overall a terrible second visit.
