I do hope with the new CITY HALL being built across the street will advance the re-generation of Orangeburg’s historic central business district and that the BROUGHTON STREET CAFE, which has been a focal beating heart of the decayed downtown. will beat even faster to revitalize this community. FINGERS CROSSED!!!
UPDATE as of January, 2025:
I have had the pleasure of eating here several times now and this place just gets better and better!!!!
I love getting off the Interstate highways and visiting these lovely historic towns that have been left behind by the HIGHWAY TRAVELLERS. The northbound drive between the I-95 and I-26 is soooooo much prettier ….and SAFER!!!!!
Orangeburg is the home of USC but the downtown area seems a bit deserted. Fortunately for me, and the people of Orangeburg, this CAFE has opened up to offer locals (and we lucky visitors) some delicious baking and locally-sourced fabulous coffee (and as a frequent visitor to the USA I have not been impressed with much of the coffee I have tasted on previous trips) in a bright, artistic and comfortable setting. This time I had the extreme pleasure of a long conversation with the owner, Greg.
Daily baking delights totally unfitting for any diet) are sold out quickly because this café has a reputation for delectable desserts.
SLICED BEEF with horseradish mayo and a CHICKEN AND PROVOLONE, both on CRISPY FRESH croissants !!!! WOW!!!! Equally delicious is the CHICKEN SALAD on a croissant with a side of LOCALLY homemade sweet wafer dill sliced pickles.
Topped off with the CAKE OF THE DAY: I have had a huge slice of fluffy and light Coconut Italian Wedding Cake with delectably soft (and NOT too sweet surprisingly ) white vanilla frosting. Their KEY LIME CAKE is also delectable.
Terrific local coffee as stated before.
Orangeburg (and the BROUGHTON CAFE) is a great stop before the crazy chariot races on the I-26 to Columbia. (I would suggest adding a half hour to BY-PASS COLUMBIA and continue cross-country on the 601 to RIDGEWAY.)
Do not forget your ice cream or skimp on it, choco-holics will especially like the “Michigan mudhole” I think it was called. Yummmmmm!
Anyone that lives in this town and does not eat here once or twice a week should be asked to leave town.
I hope your business does well! Thank you very much.
